Had to change the bearings in our Hotpoint last week. There is a lot of dismantling to do but took no more than an hour to extract it. Should take less time if you do not intend to replace it.

I suspect it would work quite well. It's more the case of do you want to look like a gypsy I suppose?

Far too thin I reckon it would only last 3 or 4 times.

I've been using one in my home made smoker all summer and it's still going strong. I looked at grabbing a dead washing machine from freecycle, but in the end found a local guy that repairs them. He sold me a dead drum for £5 which was a much nicer option than having to strip down a washing machine!

I have made a few of these, got them glowing cherry red! They will last for years but they will warp a bit around the rim after a while . I welded a heavy duty stand for mine so it sits high up off the ground. Tumble drier drums are best as they are a bit wider and deeper .

Bunkhouse near Brechfa in Wales had one of these and all of us were impressed at the heat it kicked out and couldn't believe none of us had thought of before.

A mate had one for a while. It worked really well and it didn't die from rust or melt.

By a fortuitous coincidence I fitted a new machine and offered to take the old one to the tip for somebody the day this thread was originally posted, this is the result

Sat outside this evening with a beer and for some reason remembered this thread which inspired me so took a picture.

Very good, did you use the glass door and the soap tray to put snacks in too? wink

laugh no. I was quite impressed with the old Christmas tree holder as a stand though.

Incidentally when I took the remains to the tip I asked the guy at the gate where to put a washing machine, he pointed to an area with other machines, I then explained it was in bits so would I be better putting the metal parts in the metal recycling and the rest elsewhere, the cheeky fker tried to charge me for the concrete blocks as rubble is now chargeable at our tip. Is there any wonder people fly tip

It wasn't that nbad actually, especially as I knew it wasn't going back together. Besides using the grinder would probably have taken much longer once you add in the visit to casualty.
