Hi all,

Off to get some quotes at the weekend to have lounge, stairs, landing and bedrooms x 3 carpeted.

I'm fairly sure that as soon as I walk in the showroom with the OH in tow the salesperson will be thinking of booking their next holiday with the commission smile

Carpet will be generic middle of the range stuff, any tips on how I can keep costs down, companies to recommend etc?

TIA,

See what savings are offered if you take up the old stuff yourself.

Find some Sikhs. They're really good at selling carpet cheaply. There are some in Gloucester that make anyone within about 30 miles look expensive.

The ones on barton street? If it's the ones I'm thinking of they are crazy cheap!

No, they used to be near the lift bridge, and now they're on Eastern Avenue. I'll look out for the Barton Street ones. I love cheap neutral carpet .

Use the old underlay and go to the massive sheds and haggle, haggle, haggle play their quotes off against each other there is plenty of room to negotiate.

Ah, thanks all.

I wasn't expecting the topic to get any love smile

Regarding underlay, that will need replacing as its pretty old and probably knackered.

Closest big city is Brummistan, I would think there must be some decent Indies floating about. I did have a guy come from Carpetright to measure up and give some estimates but he seemed to be plucking figures out of thin air. Our lounge is 35ft by 12ft and he seemed to randomly add things left right and centre smile

Cheers,

Lift the old stuff yourself and take to the tip. They can do it for you but will charge you, and you'll be surprised how much they do charge.

If you need new grippers then do it yourself. You'll be surprised how much you'll save.

As others have said you can do the underlay yourself, but you can haggle here. I did and it was worth the hassle of paying them to do it.

The biggy for me is pay the place you buy the carpet from to fit it. Don't pay the fitters directly. Why is very simple. If the fitters damage your home in anyway it makes claiming damages a lot easier as you're chasing a shop instead of some random sub contracted fitters in an unmarked van

Good quality (Cloud 9's a big player) underlay makes the best of cheap carpet. The reverse isn't the case.

As above, don't scrimp on the underlay. Cloud 9 stuff is good and there's 3 types for budget. I couldn't tell the difference between 2 and 3 so went in the middle. Married it with an above average carpet and it still looks new and full of spring 12 months on

Buy the best underlay you can afford and the cheapest carpet you can get away with.

Wilson's underlay is good for all the big brands. I bought the 11mm cloud 9 and some cheap fully synthetic carpet in grey by a UK manufacturer.

3 years on with some Vax action in between and looks really good still and very comfortable under the tootsies

http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/ is where I get all of my underlay and gripper from following many reccommendations on here. Their own brand PU Foam 10mm is good stuff. From the picture it looks like it has a crinkly backing to it, but it is 'fabric' so silent when walked on.

Fully agreed here. I used to sell carpet, so I like to think I know a bit.

Cloud 9, middle of the range is great. The thicker stuff makes a nightmare with doors etc. But spend on the underlay, do not buy the rubber stuff. It makes your carpet wear better, look better, and walking on it is a huge difference. Im really fussy about carpets now, people always do cheap.

Walked into a friends the other day, and first thing I commented, nice underlay. His reply, yer, some cloud 9 stuff I was told to get. It really does make the difference!

My fitter described Cloud 9 as 'fitter friendly'. It certainly weighs nothing compared to the horrible old zig-zag rubbery crap he removed which was heavier than the carpet!

when you say middle of the range do you mean thickness wise, I was looking at the 9mm, is it best to go thicker?
