Fully agreed here. I used to sell carpet, so I like to think I know a bit.

Cloud 9, middle of the range is great. The thicker stuff makes a nightmare with doors etc. But spend on the underlay, do not buy the rubber stuff. It makes your carpet wear better, look better, and walking on it is a huge difference. Im really fussy about carpets now, people always do cheap.

Walked into a friends the other day, and first thing I commented, nice underlay. His reply, yer, some cloud 9 stuff I was told to get. It really does make the difference!
when you say middle of the range do you mean thickness wise, I was looking at the 9mm, is it best to go thicker?
I had new carpets a year or so ago; went for the thicker Cloud 9 and there's quite a noticeable drop to the gripper rod along the internal door threshold. Unnecessarily thick, I'd say; the middle one (which my girlfriend got in her house) doesn't feel less plush to walk on and doesn't make all your doors rub.

I know it sounds obvious but make sure your floorboards aren't loose anywhere.Check twice, nothing worse than loose board after carpets fitted.(Got one board driving me mad).

Ah, thanks all.

I wasn't expecting the topic to get any love smile

Regarding underlay, that will need replacing as its pretty old and probably knackered.

Closest big city is Brummistan, I would think there must be some decent Indies floating about. I did have a guy come from Carpetright to measure up and give some estimates but he seemed to be plucking figures out of thin air. Our lounge is 35ft by 12ft and he seemed to randomly add things left right and centre smile

Cheers,
If you're on the east side on Birmingham Direct Carpets at Balsall common are good. Carpet from there were cheaper than Carpetright with 70% off and have lasted much better.

We have just used a small independent, 4 bedrooms landing and stairs 850 fitted. Thought it was a decent price, we got a discontinued roll that they had bought in cheap.

We had clud 9 underlay already so didn't need to replace it.

Some councils now insist that tradesmen use one van for the old carpet out and a second trip for the new carpet in.
Best to lift and take the old stuff away yourself.

second for a small independent. whilst we actually found the carpet we liked in a national chain, the small independent was able to find the exact same carpet and quote for the same space for £700 less than the national chain. Was a no brainer.

Good idea.

I've just got half a dozen 1ft squares of carpet people can attach to their feet upon entry.

It's the best quality stuff obviously, luxurious!

A trip down memory lane - bought my first carpets from Biddle and Webb auction (see they are still going)

Under £100 for the whole house!
