We are buying a house that has been empty for over 2 years, owner died, no will, took ages to go through probate. Just been told I can get reduced VAT from 20% to 5% on the renovation cost. However looking on the HMRC website (section 8 notice 708) it only seems to refer to Building work and reduced VAT for materials.

So my question is can I get the reduced VAT for window replacement (all damaged), new boiler, carpets, flooring, plastering etc? Or is it only building work?

I'm 99.9% sure you will not get a reduced rate for the likes of carpets, fancy lights etc etc
