I need to put one of these into a brick wall.

If it makes any difference the wall will be new (i.e built in the last couple of weeks).

Idea is that one end of a washing line will go on it and the other end goes to a concrete fence post.

My concern is, having seen it happen before, is that when the bolt expands it may cause the brick to crack. I would also be concerned that the load will pull the bricks out.

The washing line is quite long and will take a full load of an 8 or 9kg washing machine.

I assume you should drill into the mortar (in the middle of a joint or corner?) rather than into a brick, but would drilling onto the brick made the connection stronger?

Anyone done this recently and have a view?

I used a Screw eye and a rawlplug. Been up for a couple of years without any problem.

Same here, a Rawlbolt is over the top for a washing line. My washing line is a cassette type, it's fixed to the wall with a plug and screw, when extended the other end is clipped onto a hook that is screwed into my fence, it's been like that for 10 years without a problem.

I'd use a pulley, the line will fray in no time if it's being dragged through that.

One of these will be ideal, brown plugs and 2" screws will be more than adequate.

I asked a similar question on here when I was putting up a carport WRT non-expanding fixings. Different to you but I needed to mount a 6" timber on the wall to hold the roof joists but 3 courses from the top of the wall. Wolfracesonic came up with this type of fixing http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-hex-head-blue-tip...

My concern would it be pulling out too easily

As it happens one of the walls it could go into is still buing built

I have some of those anchor shield things left so I can ask if maybe they could put one in tothe wall for me while layign the bricks and then 'engaging it' so it is properly submerged un the morter - maybe that makes it more secure.

Will ask about these as well.

This is my solution. Hook eye wall anchor straight into the brick. Been up 25 years with no issues.

Try something like this Non expanding eye bolt No plastic plug required and no danger of splitting the brick open. Having said that my own retractable washing line is only held at one end by 2, 2'' screws and plugs and a threaded hook bolt into timber at the other, so don't over think the job!

Whatever you choose go into the brick, not the mortar joint.

A single brown rawl plug with a 50mm 10 screw into a brick has been holding mine up for 8yrs - approx 20m long and frequently full.

Your Anchor Bolt is way over the top and of all the suggestions on here, is the one more likely to split a brick.

OK, SDS drill into centre of brick and screw one of those in. M8 will do?

Anyone know any 'real life' chain stores you can buy them in?

The bricks I have are the oens with 3 holes in so there is mortar in the middle. So I need to think so I want one that goes all the way through the brick or just into the middle?
