We are doing a lot of work to our house and it looks like the gas meter has been stolen from site. How on earth do we get that replaced?

Thanks

Perhaps you've used less units and someone wants to clock their house.

Speak to your energy suppler I'd imagine.

When we had our pay as you go gas meter installed, we were advised not to keep large amounts of credit on it in case it got nicked. Never actually heard of it happening until now!

Ive had a tenant leave a property of mine before leaving 9 gas meters in the garage. Informed the police who told me it was a common theft. People will use their meter for half the month then swap over to a nicked one so that it doesnt run up a bill on their original one. Hey presto a 50% saving on their gas bill. Tenant must have been selling these on.

Thinking about it they are easy pickings requiring just a gas meter key and a large adjustable wrench with most gas meters located on the outside of peoples properties.

Assuming it was prepayment, maybe a chance to replace it with a normal meter perhaps?

Give the Gas Emergency Helpline a call (0800111999) and tell them. You effectively have an open ended gas pipe. Which is classified as Immediately Dangerous. They should respond within 2 hours, they do everything in their power to get the gas back on, as they get fined if not. So they may give you a new meter.

I had a gas meter 'stolen' by the gas company earlier this year. The previous owners hadn't payed the bill so the cheeky bds forced entry to the house and removed the gas meter and turned off the leccy. They were told by the neighbour that the previous had long gone but still broke in, I should have taken it further but couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

So Utility warehouse are going to charge....
But there are some details i am unable to answer on the questionnaire

  • Type of meter required (U6/U16/U25/U40)
  • Type of service pressure required
(Low is standard) Low
[ ] Medium
[ ] Intermediate
[ ] High
[ ]
  • Peak instantaneous demand (Kilowatt hours per hour, kWh) - (see reverse for guidance)
Do you require a meter outlet pressure greater than 21 mbar? (21mbar is standard)
(see reverse for guidance)
The charges listed below only apply to a low pressure supply.
To provide a quote for any other pressure supply we will ask you to supply more information.
Type of meter Approximate capacity (kWph) Price (ex VAT) Price with Housing (ex VAT)
U6 0-65 £86 N/A
U16 66-172 £214 £300
U25 173-267 £250 £380
U40 268 – 293 £423 £440

Most domestic installs use a U6 meter, with low pressure inlet (>75mbar) and no more than 21mbar on the outlet.

On the other side of the coin

They've already supplied one - how many times would you expect to get free meters?

Oh and they aren't going supply gas without one and winter is coming so I doubt they will be inclined to offer freebies

I'll check tomorrow but there's no way you should be paying for that.

It sounds to me as though you're filling in a form to request a new meter, you don't need a new one, you need a replacement.

That's a good point. I could say if you don't supply one i will connect it up without a meter..

A u6 is about £100 for them to install

Well that would be a silly thing to say, because as soon as it's discovered (and it will be) Natioanl Grid would be able to cut off your supply quite legally (albeit they probably wouldn't on a first offence).

Have you actually rang them, explained the situation and asked them to fix it or are you just filling in a form? I work in the industry and my company have never to my knowledge charged for a stolen meter. For a start, the meter belongs to the supplier, unless you've been somehow negligent in looking after it then I can't imagine a scenario that you should pay for a stolen meter.
