Guys,

We're moving house shortly and need approx 40x heavy duty large boxes. There seems to be hundreds of sellers on ebay, but does anyone have a personal recommendation, or otherwise? Last thing I want is the box to collapse frown

This seems very good value..

Pretty sure I got some from them when I moved last month - the double thick boxes are very strong but useless if they get damp/wet - rain is on the way! Could wrap in cling film/shrink wrap I guess?

Buy them second hand off of Gumtree or something. We bought 20 new ones from ebay, which were fine, but we woefully underestimated.

So we got 50 second hand for 15 quid off Gumtree, and they were bigger. Most people have only used them once and torn the tape off.

We decided to rent lidded plastic crates (more commonly used in office moves) when we moved house earlier in the year.

The cost was something like £1.50 per box per week if we collected/returned ourselves. However they are quite bulky and I'd only get 10 in my golf when nested.

I'd suggest you go for more of the smaller type as the usual office size are difficult to get through a standard residential door opening. Also you're more likely to put in more than you can lift.

That said they are very strong, you can stack them easily and there is no chance that the bottom will fall through.

This is the company we used.

I don't know how the cost compares (although I can guess!!) but you can get decent strong boxes from your local self-storage places, if you want to look at them first. They come flat-packed (obv) so are easy to transport.

Hey Colin, about 6 miles west of where we are now. I'll drop you an email tomorrow.

I'd try my local self storage place, or your removal company first, that way you can be sure of quality.

Cheap boxes are a false economy as you can only half fill them, or risk your precious possessions ending up scattered on the floor when they fail.

I would second crate-hire excellent for moving be aware you may need a van to collect and drop them off.

You can buy them outright for around £12each. I bought a pallet with 120 on them, split them with my mate who was also moving. As i needed the boxes for a while, it worked out cheaper than renting (+shipping) , and i use them now for hoarding junk.

Don't do that. They are really expensive. I speak from experience. Ebay/Amazon is the way forward.

This^^

Also search Freegle...

We're moving in a couple of weeks, found a local company that had hundreds of double walled solid boxes they needed rid of - took as many as we thought we'd need with an offer that there's always more if we need them - all folded flat and by the door for collection

Maybe go for a trawl of your local industrial estates - sounds obvious but any business that sends/receives a lot of stuff in cardboard boxes will probably have plenty "in stock"

We have a packaging company locally with a trade counter who are incredibly helpful, not sure if they are price competitive but it's nice to go and look at the size options and get cheap tape and bubble wrap too while there. I'm sure you will have one nearby?

We used something like these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-LARGE-HEAVY-DUTY-PL...
But had time to move so they were great at 5-6 at a time in a car. Do hold a decent weight though.
Could sell after but they are useful for storage anyway.
