Hi

Any kitchen fitters, joiners or planners out there?

I have a design and plan (from Howdens) for a kitchen & utility room alongside a quote for supply. Not getting any movement on discount against quoted price, maybe me being unrealistic?

Anyone willing to quote for supply only or who can get a trade quote from Howdens that will better my quote (based on me buying little from them?

I took my plan (done by B&Q) to a local independent tile shop that also does kitchens, recommended by the chap who's doing a lot of the building work and fitting for me. The tile shop is expanding their business, and I guess they are offering decent discounts to get more sales by recommendations from customers. They don't seem to advertise, and I had no idea that they supplied kitchens.
Anyway, he helped me to come up with a better plan than the B&Q one (more effective use of cabinets, etc), and I'm getting a much better quality kitchen for very little extra cash.

The kitchen in my last house was supplied by a local builder's merchants, now sadly taken over by a chain. Again, very good service, decent quality, and a healthy discount. In that case, I got all the appliances (Neff) at trade price.

Ask around, try the small independents.

The difference between retail and trade at Howdens is comical.

Crossy67 - message sent, much appreciated.

Yep I can reduce the Howdens quote by between 40% to 60% with a quick pricing job online.

Clockwork

Trying that too - a joiner I know recommends a company in Newcastle and also asked a bespoke cabinet maker for a ballpark estimate to gauge if that's a good route.

I have just been through the whole process of choosing a kitchen. I spoke to Howdens via my builder whom passed on his maximum discount and the quote was still very expensive, at around 2k more than sourcing cabinets and doors elsewhere via the web. The quality of doors in partcicular if buying high gloss from Howdens was poor if you are being offered the Clerkenwell range.

I have ended up doing a lot of research into who makes the kind of doors we are looking for and separately into the different types (quality) of carcasses offered and then dealing with an independent. I am about to buy 28 units including several full height with pull out lader racks, 22mm gloss acrylic doors, 12 oak veneered doors, lots of oak trim panels and plinths, delivered for under £7k. I have bought 8 meters of quartz cut, templated and fitted for 2.5k. Finally, the appliances (Neff or Siemens) will cost me less than 6k including 4 ovens, 2 dishwashers, downdraft extractor etc. the total cost including fitting is under 17k, this compares to several quotes we had of well over 25k and one at 36k.

What do you find poor about that Howdens range?

The GF has a trade account with Howdens and a long term friend works there so we'll get the kitchen at a very cheap price (by kitchen I mean the units & included lighting only). Had a look in there the other week and that Gloss White Clerkenwell look alright, not up to the German kitchens we've seen though. But say £2.5k vs £8k+ is a large difference that could be spent on a silestone top and filling the kitchen with Neff appliances (Likely from AO).

Sounds like you've got a great deal, who did you get the carcasses from if you don't mind saying?

Despite having a trade account with Howdens, and getting a whopping 80% discount, their kitchen quote was still about the same price as everyone elses.

or in this case - having a trade account and still about 40% more than other or 4x times Ikea. And that's during their "sale"

Any recommendations for supply only in Lancs/NW?

Can I ask where you got your prices from? I'm in the process of trying to get good prices for a kitchen, quartz and ovens etc.

Thanks

Yep - JJ Ormerods in Rossendale. I've used them loads & have one in my own house.

Ormerods make the kitchens etc but only sell direct to retail. They do have a showroom where you can buy from though.

I sourced the workflow from a local company in Ware called Rock and Co.

The kitchen is made by Burbridge and is very good quality for the money. I am buying this through a local independent company but there are plenty of online independents that stock this range at decent prices for supply only. Get a plan drawn up you are happy with and then email it to a few companies that stock the product you are after and play one off against another.

Hi,

Can someone please help me, the matter is urgent.

I have the feeling that I'm being taken advantage of.

I have bought a kitchen from Howdens from my builder. Both Howdens and my builder claim that they have passed on the full discount.

It is a relatively small kitchen, with laminate tops. They are charging £12,000.

They took a payment off me for £8,000 and upon that being paid, they have delivered the full kitchen today.

Now, my builder has said that he's paid Howdens the other £4,000 and he wants me to give him £4,000 cash on Monday. Can someone please help me?

Thanks for coming back to me.

Is there any way you can help me, by getting a quote from Howdens, if I gave you the spec for my kitchen to see what the price should be?

If it's a "small kitchen" with laminate tops, don't need to see the quote, it's definitely overpriced!
