I like that.

From your latest pictures I'm rather astonished the planners refused the plans. Look how much space you still have around the building! Well done to the planning consultant there for making the numpties see sense.

Kept the wood from the old bungalow to for log burner - now we need to move it! frown

It's all been sprayed with weedkiller

Second rotavation and raking prior to seeding

What did you use to level and remove all the stones?

Enjoyed that, nice build and a nice back story too.
Agreed.

Nice job on the fence. Is the paddock yours as well, as I see you have a gate to it? I'll be doing similar in terms of fencing as we've just bought a place with agricultural land abutting the domestic curtilage.

Thanks for the positive comments guys - much appreciated. If the weather is half decent over the weekend I'll try to take some up-to-date snaps.

Spud989 - no just plain white paint, a couple of shelves & a screed floor - toyed with the idea of some nice tiles of something but the doors open into the (very strong) prevailing wind & everything just blows in so I didn't think it was worth the effort and cost - might paint the floor one day if I can be bothered.

5potTurbo - tell me about it! The plot is around 2/3 of an acre so overdeveloment was never on the cards from my point of view.

Monkthefish - sorry, no idea. The builder flattened everything then a local farmer did the rest from weedkilling to rotavation to stone removal to seeding - and all at a VERY reasonable price!! wink

Hornetrider - yep, taht's mine too - another 3/4 of an acre or thereabouts. When I was a kid it was split in 2 with a house on the bottom half. When the old lady died the council condemned the house and flattened it. My dad bought it in around 1973 - mainly to stop anyone else building on it and ruining his view! I learned to drive on it in my mum's MOT failed Wolseley 1500! smile

Excellent. Congrats on the house btw. My first car driving experience was in a similar field in an A40!

Is it a septic tank?

Would Hornetrider like bitter, lager or stout? beer

Yes, it's the original, brick built, twin chamber, septic tank. Again, it went in as part of the 1960's build.

The original was capped with a series of sort of concrete lintels my dad made (more reinforced concrete - he loved the stuff! I remember using my finger to put the date on one when before it set - 1966!.

They were (a) begining to fail and (b) looked bloody awful. Consequently we put some new ones down, put sleepers around them & covered the lot in golden gravel. When the tank needs emptying it's just a case of brushing the gravel to one side to give access to the manhole cover. I don't think it looks too bad really.

Nice thread, great build and a fantastic house. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together.

Our house (while nowhere near as grand as yours) is family owned and been empty for about 10 years. It was so nice to be able to breathe new life into it. All the old memories now along with new ones.

Great thread. Building my own house right now (with a few challenges, to say the least) and it's nice to see how it all comes together at the end!

Vat on a new build is straight forward ; you don't pay any! If contractors supplied and fit it is zero rated

My understanding (at the time at least - things may have changed) is that you pay the full rate & claim it back in one job lot at the end.

Here you go chaps - the weather was nearly ok this morning so took a few snaps

A few shrubs have gone in to break the lawn up a bit & I've pulled some of the dead bits of the hedge out & replaced with laurel - it will take a while to establish but I'm hoping it will work out ok.
