Got a bit of bother with one of our stone gate posts. Although still standing, it's actually in two pieces.

There is a crack running straight through the base of the stone (directly where the bottom hinge is on the gate).

I'm thinking of securing the top part of the post to the square millstone that sits next to it. Possibly using a couple of 1000mm M12/M16 thread bars.

Is there any other way of securing it? Don't really want to take it off its "base" if I can help it.

I'd be tempted to lift it and drill into the base and top at identical points, then maybe resin in some studding or similar to bond both pieces into one.

Can you tilt the millstone forward giving access to the back of the gate post, then drill down at a 45 degree angle from the top half into the bottom, then resin in some stainless threaded bar? Re-instate the millstone and nobodies any the wiser.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Both sound possible.

What size bars would you use either way? M16?

And lengths? What would be the shortest I could get away with?

Resin wise, stuff from Screwfix suitable?

If you are going to do as the others suggest and try to reinforce it you could use some of this stuff http://www.screwfix.com/p/rawlplug-r-kf2-380-tarma...

I used the r-kem+ to fix some studs onto fit some posts in brick work, goes off absolutely rock hard, I actually drilled some of it out the next day.

Its quite incredible stuff, be warned though don't open it until you are absolutely ready to go, it goes off very quickly. Get the holes drilled, test fit and then go for it.

Note you do need a bigger gun for these cartridges (380ml size).
