I live in a barn conversion , all doors and windows closed , don't have any food that's going off or anything in the cupboards.
However flies are constantly coming from somewhere , i've just hoovered up over 100 dead and alive flies, that's how many have appeared in the past 2 days as I cleared the house again of them on Thursday. As soon as I sit down after finishing with the hoover , within minutes there are 2 or 3 flying about again , everytime! Hopefully they will actually start stopping soon as it gets colder , but god are they annoying!

I had that when a mouse died under the floorboards of the room that was soon to be my firstborn's nursery. Walked passed and heard an angry buzzing like a small engine so took a look and the only window was black with flies.

Hit the room with spray and went in to hoover them up only to see many more coming up through the gaps in the floorboards.

Someone told me that one dead mouse could mean up to 200 new flies.

Do you have a compost heap?

We've got this problem. Thats an interesting link, I didn't know any of that. Our house is surrounded by fields, I'd always assumed it was something to do with the muck spreading that goes on at this time of year. In answer to the OP question, I've found these flys getting in under the roof tiles and then in to the upstairs rooms through gaps in the down lighters. Very annoying, but I guess thats part of living in the country.

No don't have a copmpost heap . Cluster flies was a thought , there are smallish flies and big flies too , a right mixture. Around 5 mins ago I hoovered a couple off the patio windows, just now been back there's another 4 on there, sit down again to type this and I can already see 2 flying about on the ceiling.

We had cluster flies in a rural industrial workshop. I'm afraid we never really got rid of them despite it being a modern, well sealed building. We tried sprays, zappers, sticky papers etc.

Apparently they were coming from a nearby farm.

If there is more than one species I would suspect something died.
