workbench needed
Discussion
I have a 3.8m wall in my new mancave I want to fill with a workbench. Will do everything from car spannering, woodwork through to electronics on it.
Looked at the machine mart stuff & it looks flimsy & cheap. Any recomendations for off the shelf workbenches that are in the hundreds not thousands?

I've just picked a pair of workbenches up from a farm sale for £18 the pair. I've tidied one of them up with some plywood and it is good to go. I wasn't going to pay several hundred for a flat pack timber one and was contemplating building my own until I saw the sale just up the road.
Pre-tidy up. Sheet of ply on the top and I've lined the old drawer holes with ply as well and added a shelf at the bottom.

But if I had nearly 4 meters to fit out I'd be designing and making my own. Woodwork at one end, metal work at the other, rock solid construction with some drawers and some cupboards. I'd use 5x5" for the legs, apron along the front and back for rigidity and 25mm MDF for the top which could be replaced when knackered.
A bit like this one but bigger and better and with more legs.
Making it yourself allows you to choose exactly how you want it to be. Nice project to have.
I'll just chuck this in for inspiration.... the workshop bit starts at about 6 minutes.

Probably too much but I picked up a Bott Cubio 2m bench off a seller on Ebay who sells off Bott seconds. I think it was half price so around £600, but is a serious bit of kit weighing in at around 170kg.
Like this, but mine has wheels and drawers in the middle.
Bought a matching roller cab to complete the professional garage look (in my shed..)

search ebay for USProtools, arrived today, its very shiney Service is good from them, I got a load of cabinets off them, 1 small item was missing and they are sending out on an overnight courier for me. Cabinets themselves don't appear to be cheap tat, nice feel to the draws & well put together.
Decided it will live under the bench the blacksmith is making up for me, will be handy to have a pull out unit for extra space to rig up my RC planes on in the middle of the garage.

Got carried away & bought a cabinet to be one 1/2 of the workbench. Off to see local fabricator to make up a frame for the other 1/2 and deck it with some hardwood planks
That's nice, looks almost too good to mount a vice on and start bashing stuff around on but then I know that's what a bench is for. Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
