What house insurer??
Discussion
I use Marks and Spencer, I've never claimed so I've no idea what they are like though. My neighbours house caught fire last week, luckily he has unlimited building and contents cover with the Halifax. Within 24 hrs the assessor had been out and authorised work, within a few days work began clearing the house. It's now about 10 days since the fire and the house is a bare shell ready for a rewire (the fuse box caught fire). The majority of the damage was caused by smoke and I'd have thought the insurance would have tried to clean a lot of stuff, but they are replacing virtually everything in the house, from the food in the cupboards to clothes, curtains, blinds, furniture etc, etc, I'll definitely get quote from them next time mine is due as their service has been brilliant.
Which? magazine recently updated their recommended insurers and an Internet search will bring up their thoughts including their methodology.
Recently I went to the comparison websites and was surprised by the varying prices for cover. Unsurprisingly extremely cheap cover was available from various companies I'd never heard of but the cover itself was very low. I guess it depends what you value in an insurance company. If you don't care for anything but price there are 'bargains' out there.

£93 for an annual policy? What sort of cover does that give? Buildings Insurance only I trust?
It was for building and contents. 35,000 contents and 179,000 rebuild costs with a lower voluntary excess than I have now. Pretty much my current policy but a third of the price! BFG TERRANO said:

check the "voluntary" bit.Normally "voluntary" means over and above the policy standard.

If you buy on line, read the T&Cs carefully to make sure you 'fit' the quote they are providing.

Just been on go compare, not happy! Churchy wants £310 to renew. The meerkats can do it with Churchill, exact same product for £93!! If that's what 12 years of loyal custom and no claims gets you they just lost my business!!
They all do that. There was a feature on Watchdog about earlier this week, a lady took out policy many years ago for around £300, it gradually increased to about £800, she recently shopped around around and got it for less than the £300 she was paying 10 years ago. Loyalty counts for nothing when it comes to home insurance, its no different to car insurance.AWRacing said:
Direct Line this year for us, by far the cheapest and gave the best cover in terms of what they cover as standard.
Another recommendation for Direct Line. I've had to use their Emergency Cover a couple of times and no issues whatsoever - it doesn't affect my premium either. I always shop around every year and I've been with Direct Line for 3 years running now as their cover and quotes have been consistently good for me. They're rated 5 star as well with Defaqto.Denis O said:
DON'T use Hiscox.
You'll pay through the nose on premiums and when it comes to claims............forget it.
Surprised to hear this - I'd always thought it was a high end provider and paid out well. You'll pay through the nose on premiums and when it comes to claims............forget it.
I'd shopped around earlier for switching my house insurance. I was with Axa and was worried that the policy wasn't sufficient - also saw some terrible reviews, so was keen to switch. I was looking at Hiscox and John Lewis.
Then, 4 days before the policy ended, we were burgled. I fully expected Axa to be awful but they were actually very good, and we were pretty happy with the settlement.
Given the loss of no claims, we had to stick with Axa for this year.

Saga did the same to my father-in-law - similar amounts too. He got comparable cover for £200, and got into a massive letter writing back-and-forth with Saga which kept him busy for a while.
The next year they mail-shotted him, offering cover for...£200.
We use LV= - they don't seem to jerk around with the renewal quotes on either house or car.
