DON'T use Hiscox.

You'll pay through the nose on premiums and when it comes to claims............forget it.
Surprised to hear this - I'd always thought it was a high end provider and paid out well.
Not as surprised as I was when they really messed me around on the 1 and only claim I tried to make in 40 years (not all with Hiscox).

I used them, via recommendation from the Naim users forum and recognised their premiums would be about 3 times the sheds. I was comfortable with that as you get what you pay for right. Wrong, certainly in my experience.

Thanks all, we're renewing with churchy for £96. I've also made an official complaint at the £310 renewal they offered me. Don't expect it will achieve anything but I will report back.....

That is disappointing.

I too pay far more than the sheds quote (im using John Lewis Specialist insurance) in the belief it'll save stress in the long run, and tbf so far the service has been excellent.

Who are you actually dealing with though?

I took out JohnLewis travel insurance and had a load of hassle getting straight answers from them about independent travel and ash cloud coverage. Turned out I was dealing totally with Axa. OK, I know JL isn't an insurance company but I'd expected JL people to be involved and JL levels of customer service.

After some back and forth they gave up and said I could cancel the policy and they'd fully refund me - even though I pointed out we'd already travelled on one holiday under its cover.

If you buy on line, read the T&Cs carefully to make sure you 'fit' the quote they are providing.
I would take some of those ratings with a pinch of salt.

Lots of those companies listed don't underwrite the policies they sell and instead place the policy with one of a number underwriters on their panel.

I know the following don't underwrite all (or in some cases, any) of the policies they sell: Saga, Santander, Post Office, Bradford and Bingley, Insurance4Retirement, Tesco, Lloyds, Halifax, AA, Marks and Spencers, John Lewis.

In some case it means that two customers with the same policy and cover, making the 'same' claim could end up with different underwriters and a completely different claims experience and potentially outcome if the two underwriters interpret the policy wording differently.
