I'm about to cut down a large Ash tree.

Before I chop it into logs I wondered if it had a timber value - the main trunk is perhaps 30" diameter and 12' high before splitting into smaller branches.

Or how much would it cost to get it cut into 3" planks to make a table with.

It's in the front and I have the space and a trailer etc

It would all depend on the condition of the timber, which until its down you won't know.
As for getting it milled then there are mobile mills that people will come out with. Last time I was involved on a job where one was used he was charging £450 a day from memory.

A single tree, no, it'd cost more that it's worth. For a stand of timber, yes.

Ash? It's certainly worth money for firewood if nothing else.

And Ash will burn unseasoned with no problems - significant advantage! Get the axe out...

We had ours taken down a few years ago. Did a deal with the tree surgeon who gave us a reduced price if we let him have all the timber. Top section and branches went for firewood and for the main trunk he brought in a mobile band saw unit and cut it into large planks. I think they ended up being used for table tops.

Mine appears to be a similar size to that pictured above.

I'm not expecting to get rich - but it is a large lump and is easy to load onto my trailer as I have a telehandler on site.

Just seems a shame to burn it.

Stick it on arbtalk and someone will have the trunk for milling - or slice it up and sell pile-by-pile on ebay for more money - this time of year people will go mental for it even if it's unseasoned.

If it's 30" in diameter it must be more than 12' high !

That's the main trunk size - the tree is probably 50'+ with a huge spread, it's a fabulous tree but it is within 3m of my house and it's roots have lifted the garage floor.
