How much did he suggest?
Op, don't think you answered the above.

Have you discussed anything, isn't it just best to have a quick chat than discuss about it on an internet forum?

If you're paying by the hour and he's doing several short stints in the evening you have to be careful youre not paying for several hours solely for setting up and then clearing and packing away.

Sod this bit here and bit there. That will be a pain. The trouble is with mates rates, is you sometimes get squeezed in around the day's normal work and can make it difficult to plan things.

Also part of judging good plaster work isn't done minutes after the plasterer leaves Bad work could/will crack. Our house had work done by two different plasterers. Some looked great when we left, other bits didn't...

I'm not sure I'd want a ceiling skimmed over a few days, best to have done in one hit.

I've used a recently qualified plasterer in the past. Just the once though.

I don't think that the OP is wanting just one ceiling skimmed.

Midlands I pay circa £105 a day labour only.

2 plasterers will board a 4x3 room in a day and skim it in a day - ie 4 man days per room = £420/room

My housemate charges £140/day, labour only. Hes bloody good though.

Skimming artex properly is a very skilled job; do it wrong and the whole lot can separate from the boards end up on the floor. Not sure I would want someone with 6 months experience doing it.

Skimming artex is a little trickier than board but only in so much as you need to lay your first coat of finish on thicker and almost use it as a float coat. There is little you can do as a spread to mitigate against the artex losing its key from the background, 6 months or 6 years experience. A skilled spread will know how to handle the situation and salvage the ceiling/wall should it happen though.

OP it sounds like a nice opportunity for you to get some work done at a good price and your mate to earn a few quid and gain some valuable experience.

How much will the value of the house increase once you have perfect walls. Pay him £50 a day, and a bonus of £100 per room if the room is perfect.

8-4pm = 8hr day - 1hr break = 7hrs x £6.50 = £45.50 is minimum wage

Never get a mate to do work on your house, it'll end in tears and you'll lose a friend if something goes wrong.

You obviously don't work in the industry.
You'll find its 8-5.

just agree a fixed price for the job based on other quotes you have knock a bit off as hes a newbie and either pay him when hes done or pay in 4 equal increments

you could get lucky or could end up hating each other...

your money your call but theres more folks that are crap at plastering than are good at it and the difference in the cost is generally not worth the ball ache when your starting a bent walls and ceilings

I have done for 20+ years.

It has always been 8-4 with half hour at 10 and 1

Offices are 9-5 why would builders work an hour a day more ?

Half an hour at ten? What's that for?

Normal working week is 37.5 hours. 7.5 hours a day. 8 till 4 or 9 till 5. Half an hour for lunch.
