I'd wager something is missing inside if water runs straight out of that thing. A mentioned earlier by someone, maybe somebody removed the guts of it?

Oh wow.

Wife just came home as I am searching the net looking for solutions, with the trap out in the sink, me convinced I'm going mad as I can't see how this trap would work, and she proclaims "Do you need this bit? I took it out and cleaned it the other day."

So after head scratching, hassle, time, removing side panels, getting in loft, it's the simplest of things.

Cheers for the advice. Really appreciated.
Haha! Only a woman would dismantle and leave half assembled.

Pleased you got it sorted, at least you've learnt a little bit about shower traps and vents smile I must say those easy clean shower traps are a good idea but can be troublesome as they hold very little water.

Crikey - I missed out there, I could have fixed that for a fee! I've noticed the journey to do the job would be a long one though rofl. Pleased you have it fixed.

I think this is your trap OP http://www.wickes.co.uk/McAlpine-STW3-R-Chrome-Sho...
Luckily you can go to Wickes and double check. I agree that someone has probably pulled the dip tube out for cleaning and not replaced it. Google says you can buy them separately, but for £8.99 probably not worth the bother!

Just look at all the rubbish under there, that tells you how much they cared when knocking this house up.

There was a mastic tube, bits of off cut pipe, and other crap under there.
