Thinking of moving. Manchester vs Cardiff
Discussion
I moved up to the Manchester area 3 years ago. We live in Hale which is a bit 'footballer' but that is about the only downside. I travel a lot for work so having good access to M ways, fast rail to London (1hr 45 from Wilmslow) and an international airport are all important to me. Lakes and north Wales all within 1.5 hrs travel. Wife likes it for good shopping and stuff to do in Manc. Local schools excellent. Local driving roads epic! Overall, I'd recommend it - but property is pricey.

I wouldn't live there. There are far better places to be!
Lived in S Wales for half a decade. Pontypridd gets a no from me. You want either the nice suburbs of Cardiff or somewhere out in the Vale of Glamorgan - Cowbridge etc. Llantwit major is very nice, has lots of pubs, places to eat, some little shops and a beach!

What sort of areas would i be looking at with budget of £220k. Needs to be a 2 or 3 bed with parking for 2 cars. It looks like i can get better value for money around Manchester.
Thanks,
James
Other than the well known ultra-expensive areas I think you'll be ok pretty much everywhere on that budget. Flat of house is the question. Thanks,
James
I moved to Cardiff from the North West 4 and a half years ago.
Haven't looked back once.
People are very friendly.
The city is amazing - food, entertainment, events etc are very accesable.
I'm English and I'm not afraid to show it, I've been in town wearing my England rugby shirts on match days and just enjoyed the banter (may help that my Mrs is Welsh).
Cardiff is smaller by population than Manchester and definitely feels it. Plus the surrounding are amazing.
My parents always say that they love coming to visit and driving 10-15 mins to be out of the centre and pretty much into the countryside.

When I was at university a lad moved into the halls as a transfer from Cardiff University around December time in the first semester.
He said Cardiff was full of people with a massive chip on their shoulder about English people and he found it very unfriendly. Said he used to get hassled a lot with his mates by the locals when they went out ("I can smell English people" was a usual comment when locals heard his accent)
Also a very good friend of mine was a native Welsh speaker and told me similar. Anyone at his school who couldn't speak fluent Welsh was bullied.
I shouldn't take 2 examples to tarnish a whole country but it's put me off ever since. Never had any problems being English when I've visited Scotland or Ireland.
I'd stick with Manchester

Or maybe look for a nice stone cottage, if you want something older......

I'm shocked that people have had negative experiences being an Englishman in Cardiff (game days excluded).
Go and live in New Islington
Does look good
I visited Cardiff last year
Went up there in my Porsche
I came back to it, to find some young welsh scallywag had stood on the bonnet. There were two boot prints on it.
Oh how I laughed on the way home.
I was in GM this year.
Plenty to do
Lovely birds there, plenty of space.
Walked down by the canal to the City Ground.
More of everything in GM
Cardiff's a bit little.
Every aspect of it.
