We have a porch of which one internal wall is the brick cavity wall of the house, two of the remaining 3 are stud timber with shiplap cladding on the outside, plasterboard on the interior and rockwool in between. Both these walls are glazed for the top half with timber double glazed units. The final wall is brick wall to the garage.

The floor is solid concrete with quarry tiles and there is a flat roof over it. I assume the flat roof has insulation in it. There is a timber front door, with letterbox in it.

In my opinion it is not surprising the porch is cold, but what is likely to be the biggest culprit. I suspect it might be the floor, but is there likely to be a different culprit?

The glazing , and most likely, also the flat roof

Is there a heater in the porch?

It sounds insulated (to a degree) so the fact it feels cold is likely the small size and the large area of outside walls. Since it is only a porch probably only minimal insulation was put in. The glazing area will also have a big effect on the feel of the room with the large area of cold surface.

Why does it matter to you?

I 'carpeted' our whole tiled-floor porch with deep pile doormat material and it made a huge difference. The porch is still cold but it obviously insulates the floor a little bit, and also holds a small amount of moisture so you don't just get standing water on a cold day on the floor.

As a sum of all that, it makes it just a little cosier to walk into. I was worried it would made it smell damp but it smells fresher somehow as long as it's kept vacuumed.

I doubt the roof is insulated.

If it isn't heated it's pointless insulating it - it won't get enough heat from the house (one side) to combat the cold on 3 sides and top and bottom.

There is a radiator in it. The issue is that my wife thinks it should have beeter insulation, but I am not sure. Once we replace the door between it and the house with a decent extermal door rather than the poxy internal door the previous incumbent put in it will solve the issue.

Check the roof for insulation.

The floor is the last thing to insulate.
