Red Diesel for Compact Tractor
Discussion
I have a 50L drum ready to fill for fueling my compact tractor but don't seem to be able to find anyone who will deliver this amount (min 500L) and I certainly don't want to pay more than double for forecourt fuel.
Anyone know of a work-around? Might I have to go see a local farmer? Can I use Kerosene 28 from my oil tank?

Unless you can take a 500 litre delivery, which means you need a bigger storage tank than 500 litre, the price you pay won't be much less than DERV. Unless you're using a lot you may as well just get it from a local filling station. A 50 litre drum seems an odd size. 25 litre containers can be handled easily, but I'm not sure how you'd handle 50 litres.

The OPs profile says he's in Saudi so can't he just dig a hole in his garden?
On a more serious note, the local station to me has a red pump - people just turn up and fill several jerry cans from it. Can you not do similar? I do live rural and the station is also on a canal and looks like something from Heartbeat but it serves a multitude of useful purposes.

I am in Saudi, well spotted.
I do, however, go home occasionally and need to do some gardening on the tractor.
A 50L drum is unusual, now that it is mentioned. I picked up 2 at the Dubai Autodrome 24 race one year, used for race fuel. Handy as I did track days there, now handy for gardening fuel. I have one with 20L of Super in it for mixing 2 stroke, I recall only putting 20L in as I thought 50 might be a little heavy!
I think I may have to go talk to a friendly farmer then.

My local tool hire place in Old Woking sells red in 20 litre drums (or fill your own), and it is much cheaper than using DERV.Same problem, so I rang the local supplier and asked the question, he pointed me to a local filling station with a red pump,a large local hire centre kept being a target for thieves, so they did a deal with the owner and he swapped one pump.
Eventually two local farmers now use the place instead of storing and losing fuel.
You can buy up to 50 litres without problem, over that and there are some forms to fill in for the relevant government department.

The same amount would be about £114 from the pump.Look around the local area for Fuel Suppliers - IE Coal, FloGas etc they usually have a Red diesel pump too.
I have two near me but despite the petrol price drops they still charge 90p/litre so not much of a saving now.
If you have a friendly farmer it's worth a try as they pay closer to 60p buying in bulk.

60something at the local red pump. But it is a (small) depot. Not worth the risk of owning a tank for us at that price.I have two near me but despite the petrol price drops they still charge 90p/litre so not much of a saving now.

Bulk was as low as 43p odd not too long ago though...
Any local marinas? They usually have red, and can do small amounts.
Last lot I had was 48p plus VAT, fairly sure VAT is 5%, 1000lts via Countrywide Fuels who are now owned by Ford Fuels.

Strictly speaking a farmer shouldn't resell it unless registered as something or other. I think that's more to do with protecting the duty than H&S. I can't remember the specifics but a Farmer's Buying group I was in got in trouble for ordering in bulk for it's members, we all had to provide our VAT numbers and be listed on each order.
