I am replacing the kitchen in a flat. It has an open plan living room / kitchen. I want the kitchen to have a different flooring to the main part of the room, but don't want to go to the expense / hassle of replacing the entire floor area. So I will need to cut out the existing laminate, and join the new flooring (see yellow).

Do I just use some kind of edging strip? I might use a lino in the kitchen. Or perhaps tiles. What do you think? I am partly thinking of noise issues for downstairs neighbour which is why I was thinking of linoleum. But if it looks crap I won't.

As it is with old kitchen removed. The flooring wasn't finished properly where it went under the old units. I want to sort it so it's complete and neat up to the walls, before fitting new kitchen. (I will be sorting out the walls).

Google 'floor transition profile' . There are all different types: wood to wood, wood to tile, carpet to wood etc. Ask at wherever you buy your new kitchen floor from, they should have something suitable.
