I have a few of these to paint black:

Any recommendations on which paint to use? Spray or brush? Looking for a smooth, gloss finish.

Thanks!

They look like an allow casting. Is that correct?
If so, get them powder coated and forget about it.

Try a little 400 grit paper then two coats of spray can Hammerite, smooth black finish. Available most motor factors, halfrauds etc.

That's lovely. Shame to paint it.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Does powder coating still allow for a gloss finish? I've never had anything powder coated before. What sort of cost are involved?

B17NNS - that is just a generic photo off Google. Mine are a range of white, black & green, with a lot of "character".

Ah, gotcha biggrin

And yes, powder coating is gloss. Most alloy wheels are powder coated.

If you just fancy doing it yourself, POR15 is highly regarded amongst those of us with rusty powder coated chassis'.

I'd get them bead blasted and then powdered coated for a good, long lasting finish.

I've used POR15 on loads of external metal (mainly cast & wrought iron - hoppers, guttering , light supports, gates) to good effect, and the chassis and wishbones of the car of course.

Powder coating, it's usually not expensive if you're not in a hurry and the coaters can put them through with other stuff in a batch of the same colour.

Bear in mind that you'll have to strip, glass, plastics and wiring if they're going to be powder coated. It's also prudent to protect any threads with old bolts or you'll have to re-tap them when you get them back.
