There was a post recently where a PH'er bought a front door for several thousand poinds, I chimed in taht I thought it was ridiculous to pay that for a door and was promptly told something like "always buy the front door of the house you aspire to".

Which was odd.

That is an odd quote rofl

Depends on the door with regards to spend. I would never pay thousands for all the composite and upvc rubbish that is sold secure, part e energy compliant, less maintenence blah blah.

For a beautiful period style doorway, painted nicely with stained glass or a cool contemporary design (depending on house age) then sure.

I got my composite door from here http://www.justdoorsuk.com/ for about £600 IIRC and got a joiner/plasterer to fit it.

Admittedly he was already working on my house at the time so saved me quite a lot on the rate. Took him a morning.

Taken in the afternoon it was fitted. It's actually blue, but my phone camera was crap and it was overcast.

Source the door and fittings yourself and get someone to fit it - hassle but cheaper option

Pay a few hundred pounds more and get it supplied and fitted by a recommended/ trusted trades person - less hassle but will cost more

I am just in the process of ordering a pair of new composite doors.

There seems to be a huge disparity in pricing.. I am looking at supply only as I will fit myself.

I have found a company online that will supply the doors I want for £1200 inc VAT for the pair and as it happened I was in the local upvc window and door supplier this week to pick up a new window and I saw they had the same range of doors available.. I told them I wanted a pair of the composite doors and have got a good price online but would always rather deal with a local company if possible so let me know what they can supply them at..

They emailed me this morning with a price of £1800 inc VAT for the same doors.. They are unable to match the price offered online which is a shame as I doubt they have to pay any more for the doors... Obviously they don't deem the profit margin available big enough to bother with.. Shame as even £50 per door for example is better than no order!

Overheads of the physical shop will be far more than the internet retailer.

The Oak door was £1243 IIRC and the hardwood door £943 painted (sprayed). Supply only, was building my house so the builder fitted them.

Edited, if you click on it, it seems to work.
Mind if I ask where you sourced these from? I see you're in Shropshire too, and we're currently looking for a door much like (exactly like?) your hardwood painted one. So far I've been quoted around double that, and even that's only primed...

Cheers,

We need a new front and back door to the house.
Just been quoted £2860 for the two! Sheeet, I almost laid an egg when he told me and bless him, he thought I'd be chuffed with what he'd offered, I had in my head that it was going to be around £5-700 for them!
I assume I was well off the mark and the reality is doors do cost a fair whack then?
I paid around that for just a front door. However it was nothing to do with "buying the front door of the house I aspire to" or whatever that quote was, it was a case of:

Need a new front door
Look at door in B&Q, hmm, that's quite nice, get price.
Look at other door from door company, that's nicer, but more expensive. Repeat with various manufacturers of composite doors getting progressively nicer, and progressively more expensive.
Go to homebuilding and renovation show at the NEC, see a door made of steel that I really, really liked. OK, I'm having that one (price unknown at this point). Get a price from local dealer. Right then, looks like I'd best forget about holidays for a couple of years then!

It's a really nice door, and everyone that comes round comments on it, but it was ridiculously expensive (and entirely inappropriate for a small 1950s bungalow).

I really do mean *everyone* - friends, various trades I've had round to do jobs, random bloke that knocked on my door trying to buy my VW camper van, who rang me a couple of months later not to ask if I was now interested in selling the van, but who made the door ...

Thanks - we're the other side of Shrewsbury (down Much Wenlock way), but not so far away in the big scheme of things. I'll give them a call.

Cheers.

I think we paid about £800 for a solid oak contemporary type door (just the door) with all the hardware on top of that.
Then we had two double glazed frosted glass side panels a custom frame and the number frosted on.
Fitted and finished was about £2.5k
I'm currently looking for something very similar.

Any chance of a picture?
Just be careful of solid oak, if that's really what it is. Mine is an Oak composite and has better ability to resist flexing from heat. A solid oak door will move about all over the place in summer vs winter.
That, Sir, is bullst!

Sounds like a similar experience to us when we spruced up our derelict dive. We bought a Hormann door and, like you, almost every single person feels the need to compliment us on it. We've even had two separate knocks from drivers who've been passing wanting to know more about it.

Obviously they were just brazen future burglars rather than innocent parties...

I usually pay around £500 for a glazed composite, you should be able to get one fitted for around £750 from a local independent. Have a look at Rockdoors, you may have a local supplier, they were advertising them for around £400+ vat not long ago, they look pretty decent. Another development I seen recently looks interesting, they can now be fitted with a 5 lever lock instead of a euro cylinder. http://www.wbgroup.co.uk/composite-doors.php

I don't get this argument, what is to say the online retailer doesn't have physical premises?

It's not as if they store the doors on a computer and send them down your broadband, is it?

Paid £2700 or so for two fancy Rockdoors, I thought that was about normal for a door of this type.

They take about about 60 seconds to be taken down with a petrol powered circular saw if done by two people who know what they are doing.

This should give me enough time to flush the drugs.
