That's half the problem. Cheap or expensive, price is no guarantee of a quality job.
Personal recommendation is the way to go with fitters IME.

I agree with this. It's a 3 day job (if that) and we would price it as such. Cost would depend on local rates, but £500 for cash should get you a decent joiner.

£45 per unit
£10 per mtr for fitting work tops
£6 per mtr for plinth
£15 per cut outs, ie hobs, sinks.
£35 per mitre cuts.
cornich/pelmet £10 per metre

However, further to my previous post with the quote of £1900, I have had a survey visit from the fitter and the price has gone up by a further £650 - this for the alterations to the d/w & w/m connections, replastering the splash back area pre-tiling (if necessary), connecting the gas hob (we already have a gas hob, last time I needed a new one connected a local GasSafe plumber charged me £50, this lot want £150) and fitting filler strip above the wall units (we want it flush to the ceiling). So we're at £2550 now before they start and "find anything else". I think they're sacked.

6m worktop = £60
6m plinth = £36
2 worktop cutouts = £30
1 mitre cut = £35

= £656, plus ripping the old out, plus fitting two integrated appliances. When can you start?

I am going to get other quotes anyway although I'd like to work off recommendation if possible so I'll scout around the local area.

As a guide we would charge around £2500 including VAT. So around £2100 if you can find a fitter that isnt VAT registered.

That is a complete remove old, install new, remove all waste, inc all plumbing, gas and electrical connections.
It is not unreasonable to charge for making good plaster is required, but it isnt usually required if tiling over the original area, the tiles tend to cover and therefore make good.

We are based in the South East, if I could find good fitters to do installs for the rates BFG suggests I would be a wealthy man.

Thanks Neil, that's helpful, puts my quote in the same ballpark as your price. Unfortunately for us I have no knowledge of the fitters as they were "approved" fitters from the shop but I do know we don't pay until satisfied, although that may be scant consolation if they make a dog's dinner of it. Got at least one more person to try next week.
