I had a 4kw system fitted on 14/06/13 for £5990. So far I have generated 6454kw which is £1235 income. I also save a £400 a year on electricity. So after 2 years it should be about £2300 income. £1150 a year for 20 years, then if they are still working £400 year after that. Try getting that in interest on savings. I don't think they look bad. They will not destroy your roof if fitted properly.

They will in ten years when the EPC rating determines the council tax....

Yawn. That's been gossiped about for ages, it is never going to happen.

A quick question, does having A bunch of solar panels on the roof boost the EPC of a property?
Yes, quite significantly. That's why a lot a new builds have PV slapped on the roof as it is a relatively easy and cheap way to up the EPC rating up and the target emissions rating which has to be met for building regs.

The EPC rating is a pure product of estimated cost. The calculation will assume the 50% of the power generated is used and 50% is sold back to the grid so 100% of the estimated total the panels will generated (based on lab conditions!) offsets the cost of electricity to the house.

Don't be naive. The database is building up in size all of the time - and is owned by the government.

When they have enough data of course it will

Had a 3.5kw Black Sunpower Solar panels with the Solaredge optimisers fitted to the back of the house last year. The whole install cose a shade over £6.5k with an itemised breakdown of all the costs. No government subsidies were required.

The Solaredge optimisers added to the cost and more efficient 320w panels were prohibitively expensive so I never chose them.

I'm on for 3MWh which I think will be around £500 at the Fit rates I have and my energy bill has come down by £500 also.

You hear scare stories on here about damage to roof. I was involved at all stages of my install and feel free to query the installer on how they will connect the rails to the roof.

P.S - A doctor friend of mine had a quote from a fruit named company here in Berkshire. The installation costs were almost treble and generation estimates grossly off the mark. I had 2 other reports to compare his to.

Its not naivety at all. I worked in the industry for years.

I will eat my hat if it ever happens

so in years to come the council will penalize those who do not have solar roof panels by increasing the tax !!!! how will they get round a block of flats and those properties with no access to sun ? and also assume the properties with south facing aspects and panels will triple in value !! please explain no way I would ever stick these on a quaint cottage or like, thatched roofs ??? or anything

Ive heard thru grape vine of a new fuel.................................................................................................................................................................................................its called coal and logs LOL ALL very interesting

Nobody suggested that. You don't need solar panels for a good EPC rating.

Nobody suggested that councils would penalise those without solar panels.

if a data base as mentioned collecting info,as mentioned here, is used to calculate tax relating to epc levels and it was mentioned here that solar panels contibute to a better epc rating to me that says if one side benefits then the other must loose out, or some how have to get equal by other means ??? im only going on the comments here not my view into the future

and I still say they are ugly and will NOT be fitting them to my property while I have a choice in the matter...

I'm interested in why you say this? (genuinely)

I've got 'A Shade Greener' coming round at the end of the month for a survey. It's a 'rent a roof' scheme.
They fit, monitor and maintain the panels all for free. I get some free top up power during the day, so I'll stick the washing machine on timer for midday, or tumble dryer etc.

I don't see any catch?

Option one gives you little or no benefit.
Option two is probably twice the price it needs to be.

If you are serious source a local REA approved installer and talk to them.

I can't fault the logic either. Update us when they've been round will you.

Will do.
My plan once the panels are fitted, is to install a 'Solar iBoost' (Google/Youtube it) and then feed any unused electricity into the immersion heater, rather than feed back into the grid.
Considering we aren't on mains gas, and pay a fortune for LPG - we should save a lot of money.

you can't see the downside in signing a 25 year lease to your roof?
