I mowed last weekend, and I'm contemplating doing the first feed this weekend. Woking.

Our first feed was Feb 24th. 1st cut will most likely occur later this month.

Gave ours a first trim last Sunday on the costa del Wirral so I don't have to be too worried about frost and snow.

I should have done my father's last weekend, so yes, go for it!

But cut high.

Be good to get this badboy out of the shed again

Thinking of totally reseeding this year, will have to wait till april at the earliest though, but should be nice to have a good lawn for this summer (if we get a summer that is)

Did mine Wednesday, haven't had frost on the ground for sometime now and the grass has been growing well for the past month.

Looks lovely, I do like a nicely edged and mown lawn.

I'm thinking about completely starting again with mine as its at least half moss.

I'd like to go down the reseed route, but also thinking about putting in some drainage as well to help combat the underlying moss problem.

Any tips?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I think I may need to re-seed this year.

Seeded from scratch last April, and it went well, lawn looked lovely.

However, over winter the grounds been wet all the time as our garden doesnt drain very well, and now it's looking very sparse all over. Was planning to go over it with a fork and put lots of holes in it, then cover in grass seed and hope. Any tips on when I should be doing this? Probably a bit too early now I know.

If you can't fix your drainage issue, perhaps consider either buying or hiring an aerator once a year in spring, then brush a load of sand/loam into the holes. Once done, overseed, fertilize and water - then sit back and watch.

ps. I don't do any of this as I'm far too lazy - I just get a local firm to look after our garden and this appears to be what they do.

Yup, you need to add sand. When I rotavate the lawn later in the year I will hopefully be adding a couple of tonnes of sand to the soil to aid in drainage.

Most hire centres have aerators and scarifiers.

We did ours last year, staggering amount of thatch and moss extracted. I then gave it a good feed just before autumn. its faired really well over winter, drying out quickly as no moss holding water like a sponge.

Its well worth the weekend effort

Hoping to do the first cut of the year on Sunday here. then will be looking at getting a scarifier in, followed by 1001 tonnes of seed no doubt as not sure if their is actually any grass in there amidst the weeds and moss!

Well after the big build up my garden is still too wet so I'll end up ploughing the grass rather than cutting it so I'm gonna have to wait a little longer.

Make sure your mower blade is as sharp as possible! Look at the tip of the grass and it should be a nice clean cut. If its ripped then your blade is dull.

My first cut is either Good Friday or Tit Monday, whichever is the sooner.
