I intend to erect a shed in my garden and wondered how close to the private wooden power pole that feeds our property it can be sited. For clarity the overhead cables come to the pole and then down to the ground so the shed would not be under the overhead lines. Any help appreciated as no luck searching the web or from the local planning dept and booklet GS6 also seems unhelpful.
Thanks in advance

I don't see why it can't be right up against it.

Muncher I'd like to think you were right but I've read 1m, 3m & 9m so really need some written regulation or guidance, I don't intend on moving it once built.

It may depend on any rights granted to the electricity authority and whether there is any specific mention of building distances in there. Does the line serve just your property or other ones too?

The line serves just our property, we have recently moved there and there is nothing in the deeds relating to the wooden power pole

My 6ft front wall was built virtually touching the BT pole outside my house.

Has it now got a red letter "d" on it?

For clarity, my pole is an electrical supply pole not BT phone pole.

Find where the cable runs once it enters the ground, and don't put it on that in case there is a fault at a later date. If the cables leading to the pole are insulated( which I am certain they are), then leave enough room to be reasonable to enable acces up the pole for a couple of burly blokes and a ladder. I'm also assuming there isn't a pole mounted transformer on it?

That sounds sensible but is this based on any legislation or guideline, I'am sure there must be something somewhere and knowing that ignorance is no defence I'd like something to refer to if questioned.

Unfortunately the power supply company don't own the pole or line (electricity through British Gas) and not interested

It's not the power supply company you need but the DNO (distribution network operator), it will be someone like WPD or UKPN depending on where you live.

as gazapc says in his reply it will be the power supply netowrk operator that owns the pole ( and presumably the pole top 11kv to 230 / 400 v transformer)

very good point aobut knowing where the cable runs are going when it comes down the pole

I meant the infrastructure owner, not who you buy it from.
For example mine is weston power distribution.

Thanks for your help guys, have confirmed that UK Power Networks own the pole. E-mail sent asking for clarification on how close I can site a shed and according to their website they will respond within 5 working days.
Will post their response when received.
Cheers
