I use Visio for work to do layout plans, which are in 2D and use electrical CAD. However I think CAD is just going to take me an age to do a building layout in 3D, as I am not competent on plain CAD.

What is the best thing I can use to do this? It needs to be in the 3D due to the beams in the house.

I don't think it is worth me spending a small fortune on, as I wont give it the use for that.

A mate of mine uses Sketchup with good results. He really rates it.

A 30 day trail of Autodesk Revit should do the trick.

It's pretty easy to learn for basic architecture and there are plenty of tutorials on youtube.

Sketch up is pretty good, Autodesk also offer free trials of their software for up to three years if you're a student.
