Log Cabins - good suppliers/manufacurers

I am advised by SWMBO that we are having a log cabin style summer house in the garden and that I will be sourcing and constructing said item.

The aim is to have a building that we can use for much of the year that may be suitable as a home office for the warmer months.

Has anyone had/built one who can give me pointers to good suppliers/manufacturers.

I was also be interested to hear about ease of construction, common pitfalls etc

Just my two cents - you'll get a better result if you can find someone local building such sheds rather than a company which imports kits and puts them together or lets you put them together.

What size are you thinking of?

For something that is both well built and looks nice you'll be looking at more money than you have likely budgeted.

The base will likely be your hardest task.

The size is around 10x8 or 12x8 (feet)

Base is already in situ just needs extending a little and that will be done by a ground worker to make sure its all level etc.

Budget is up to £5k but I am always happy to make savings

I can find local shed builders, but none that do log cabins, their summerhouses are just glorified sheds.

Ok my tuppence, you say SHMBO wants a cabin style shed. So I would suggest a blockwork construction with timber cladding, and inside either plasterboard or internal cladding.

This will give you something that will last ages, allow you to hang a decent weight off the walls, be properly insulated.

And above all will be cheap and easy to construct.

58mm log thickness with a covered deck at the front.

Concrete slab and the 18mm floorboards on top of insulation. Also insulated in the roof.

I guess it depends when / how you intend to use it. My friend has a similar smaller tuin cabin as a home office with electric heating and it's dry and warm all year.

Hmm, hadn't thought of that, but probably more of a PITA to build, it will need foundations (these will be difficult owning to tress) and the wall thickness will be bigger so we take up more space for less outside space. I would need to get a builder in, there will be complexities with windows and doors, plus I would have half a chance of relocating a log cabin.

Done a lot of research into this recently, as currently just about to pull the trigger on a 4m x 3m log cabin.

You need to find a broker as they dont sell direct on the website. Whilst I've found that all the brokers tend to change the names of the cabins from LV's official name, they all still refer to them as LV cabins, so you can still find the brokers on the web.

I'm also quite close to choosing a DunsterHouse one. Glossy website, and good selection, but theres just something a bit Delboy about their operations. They make so many 'we do this but our competitors dont' but I'm not sure who these competitors are, because I see the same features on all the competitors I looked at.
