Playing with my old lawnmower https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpwYd5hZg3o A whirling, open fan and unguarded chains - don't mention elf & safety!

This was originally posted for a Spanish friend, hence the foreign text.

Edit: it is a 1921 Atco Standard. Around 900 were made in that year with an oval cast iron frame. Atco then switched to H-section wrought iron as the cast was too fragile. It cuts superbly, but is very heavy - hard to heave around the trees etc.

Thought I had posted this, obviously not. Bought it last year and it was what prompted me to rip up the lawn and start again!

As posted in the lawns thread, my recent purchase. Looks like I need to give the clutch assembly and cable's a little looking over I've given it a quick adjustment at lunch time and managed to get it so I don't need running spikes to keep up wit the thing as it launches across the garden.

It's a Ransomes Marquis I bought off a nice chap on ebay. The original motor has been swapped out for a newer Kubota number which runs very well and it relatively quiet.

OK, here's mine, a 21 year old Countax K14 Twin. 14hp of Briggs & Stratton powered 1994 vintage British engineering!

Funny thing is, it's shown here sat on my lawn. Erm, that's pretty much all of my current lawn! However I have another thread running covering our self-build project, and it's needed for that. Recently bought from eBay, it's done a great job clearing our paddock ready for groundworks, and it's had some much deserved TLC including a good clean, new headlight lenses, belts, steering pinion/quadrant and a front inner tube. It all works...electric clutch on the cutting deck, lights, powered grass collector, PTO, the lot. Only thing that doesn't work is the seat safety switch that's been disabled as I assume it's quite annoying. Brake/clutch one works again as of today. Hopefully ready for the next 21 years of service!

Shiny engine...

The cockpit (ha!)

Funky little keyring...

Many levers which do many things...

Truth is, by the time the house is built, it might actually be a bit big for the garden, so I may end up selling this on and getting something smaller. However with serious 3' high brush, thistles and grass to clear before we started, I don't think a lesser mower would have coped. We shall see...if I do the garden in a mower friendly shape I might just keep it...I do quite like it's Meccano/Land-Rover qualities!

My current collection has just grown with the addition of a 'wheeled strimmer' to the stable, whilst not strictly a mower I feel it belongs in the category as it has wheels. I intend to use it to lay waste to stingy nettles, bracken, and the dreaded ground elder.

Sorry, but if that was mine I'd have to add Blower Bentley style union jacks to the sides...

I was going to add a 'Hayters gonna hate' but the Bentley idea is far more original hehe

I've just bought an old 2 stroke Flymo for cutting the bank outside our stables. I think it is a 70s model so it may be older than I am but is in phenomenal condition.

Yeah, I saw that on another thread...very shiny! However I'm sure you said was too big, and when my new house is built I reckon the K14 will be overkill in the extreme.

Tell me though, the little bar between the front wheels that attaches to the cutting deck, how does yours stay off the ground when the deck is removed? Mine just drags on the ground and makes reversing impossible...

No, the silver bar still on your tractor in the shot...but somehow still staying upright.

Erm...the plot is 1/3 of an acre but that's before the house, garage and driveway started to go in! So probably serious overkill, however I did buy it to clear the plot before the build started with a view to selling if needed. TBH as the whole garden is a blank slate (and currently looks like The Somme) I can design it in a way that is ride-on mower friendly. We shall see!

Great mowers though, even if it's a sledgehammer/nut scenario, I just love it as a "thing".

That's part of the height adjustment and should stay up on its own. If you struggle for a manual I'll pop a link up when I get home.

Having just moved house I'm looking for a new lawnmower as I left my old 46cm mountfield at for my tenants.
Any recommendations based on:

sub £300
Petrol
Not a large garden
Preferably new

From having a look around there's plenty available from Webb, cheapest Hayter or Honda Izy?

I'd love a mulching mower but the grass is in shade a lot so not sure if that might not be a good idea?

I have a bog standard Hayter, a bit of the pull broke about a year ago and I haven't got round to fixing it and quotes to have it fixed were as much as it cost me in the first place. Have been using a Bosch electric one all year which has been a bit of a chore.

However I have just bought a 24" Webb on eBay, the guy says he'll give me at least £20 for my Hayter in part exchange, so won't be much more than having the Hayter fixed. So excited to be getting a nice wide cylinder mower!

This is my latest and currently favourite from my little collection of mowers: a 1940s/50s 14" Greens Zephyr designed for use on bowling and putting greens, fresh from its post-cut wash.

The quality of cut that it achieves is outstanding.
