Doing the 2nd fit of a kitchen this morning, off to take the C/U cover off to do my testing, and.......

Thats a cupboard BTW.

And off course the kitchen fitter had scarpered!

Now seriously what goes through ones mind when they do this?

Do they realise what they are doing and just not care?

Do they seriously think its a good solution to a C/U being in the way?

Did it not occur to them before that it was going to be in the way?

Its not the first time I've come across similar punch

As long as the cover goes up it wouldn't bother me. Was the kitchen fitter was supposed to move the box?

Shame you didn't use a spirit level on the consumer unit. Maybe he was trying to stop any embarrassment?

If the fitter moves the box, that would be an extra £1-2k on your bill, did you ask for it to be moved when you designed the kitchen?

I fking hate know it all posts like this, that is a 10 year old Starbreaker board, it obviously not just been fitted, and judging by today's standards its more likely the cupboard that is pissed.

For the others the lid now cannot be removed to connect the circuits or do ant testing. Having said that its always a good idea to have a good look at the plans beforehand and see what's going where although its probably a redesign half way through with no thought other than what the lovely doors will look like.

Make the hole a few inches wider, then make a removable piece to cover the gap?

Can't take the C/U cover off without taking down the cupboard which is all siliconed in!

I'd just use a multi-tool to cut out a section big enough to facilitate the removal of the cover. You could then put a couple of blankets on the section you've removed in order that you can simply drop it back into place once you've finished testing.

ETA - Brackets would work better than blankets!

The fitter has made a reasonable job of cutting in the unit around the consumer unit, so guess he just hasn't thought about it fully. As opposed to not caring.

It drives me nuts!

I'd like to think it's because they don't realise things like boilers, CUs etc need to be opened up, but I find it hard to believe anyone who's been in the trade for a decent length of time, hasn't ever seen a spark or plumber working on a CU or boiler!

So I've come to the conclusion that they are lazy tts, that don't give a fk!

What gap?

I see the point, but my CU has been happily in place for 27 years and not required opening. But in this case, yes, if you want to be able to take the box apart, use a multitool or jigsaw to make more clearance at the top. I'm still filing it under 'no big deal' smile

2 options other than raising the cu height.
1 chop a big enough hole to allow the front to be removed.

2 the unit could be raised to completely house the cu within. That would throw the line out and the cupboard will obviously look stepped

Presumably he was not a sparky and didn't want the extra costs of a sparky attending, removing the CU then refitting it inside the cupboard.

As mentioned, another couple of inches cut off the top of the cupboard to leave a bigger gap would have solved the problem.
Shame as it looks like he's done a neat job, wouldn't have been surprised to see the top panel of the cupboard hacked out completely on the basis that a sparky will need to access the box. smile
