For the last month I've had my boiler off and I've been using the solar to heat the water tank. Am I damaging my boiler not using it and would there be some issue with bacteria at night when the solar isn't doing anything?

I've got a massive frickin headache so I'm probably missing something really obvious. I really don't understand the point of a boiler as its only used for hot water and heating. That can be achieved by solar. Everything else makes its own hot water (washing machine, dishwasher) or am I missing something. And when the suns not out I don't mind the cold - sleep with the windows open and have no issue with warm/cold showers.

Just legionella in the hot water tank, if it doesn't get up to 60 degrees or so most days. If it doesn't, stick a timer on your immersion heater so it heats it overnight, just to around 60 and then it can turn off.

Not too much of a problem with a small domestic tank, however its a good idea to heat it over 60 once in a while. My mother uses an electric shower so her boiler is off for the whole of summer.

Nah, my house doesn't get that cold or maybe I don't feel it.

No problem, but I would, maybe once a month let it do an hour or twos work. Things like zone valves, pumps, fans, gas valves can play up through lack of use.

Yup, my dads heating uses to be off for months at a time. Ended up with the pump seizing up and having to be replaced so he uses to put the heating on for an hour every few weeks after that.
