There is a bit of woodland at the back of my house and noticed today the neighbour at the back has climbed over and cut a sycamore down. There are about 5 very young trees prob 15 foot high and one has been cut and left on the floor. Did go round and ring the bell but no answer.

Are you sure it was him? And if so, any thoughts as to why he did it?

When you see him, ask him to cut the rest down. The worst tree in the world, the tree equivalent of bind weed.

Criminal damage and trespass with a possible loss - I looking for a damn good explanation.

He can remove overhanging branches, but he can't cut the tree down

Sort of. Sycamore is not neighbour friendly, so replace it with something nicer, and ask the neighbour to pay some towards it.
Preferable to VBRJ and a frozen sausage war.

Problem is can you prove it was him?

If so, sue them for the cost (including installation) of an equivalent tree (size, species etc.) would run into thousands and really piss him off...

Even not, may be worth it for the sake of £25 if you don't mind driving a train through neighbourly relations...

Sycamores are non indigenous and no better than weeds. Even areas with blanket TPOs aren't concerned with them. I'd be grateful he'd done it and saved me getting a tree surgeon in. Take the rest down ASAP and replace them with something nice.

That's not entirely true, plenty of sycamores are covered by TPO's both in blanket TPO's and as individual TPO's, they have ecological benefit as they are home to many more invertebrates that even a native conifer. Plus plenty of trees that we think are valuable are not native, so why treat a sycamore differently?

eg:

Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica f. purpurea)
Cedar (Cedrus libani)
Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum)
Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa)
Cypress(Cupressus x leylandii)
Huntingdon Elm (Ulmus x hollandica 'vegeta')
Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)
Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla)
European Larch (Larix decidua)
London Plane (Platanus x hispanica)

And many more

Would you encourage those to be felled willy nilly without permission of the owner?

Sycamores are excellent fast growing wildlife supporting trees and no worse than any other weed/tree in the wrong place, and excellent in the right place.

Place a claymore anti-personnel mine at the base of each remaining tree. Just in case
