We're pricing up doing a barn conversion and I've been looking at ground source heat pumps. Obviously for these rather a lot of piping needs to be buried. Is there any reason this piping couldn't be buried early on in our project, when I'm likely to have a big digger on site, then connected up to the pump towards the end of the build? Probably many months later.

I couldn't see a reason why not, but I know next to bugger all about them.

Nope, no reason at all. Wash out the piping if it has any dirt in it, then cap it off temporarily until you are ready to connect up.

Bore hole is another option, but is dependant on a geographical survey and is quite costly.

Aye, about £15k per borehole last time I had them dug - all 20 of them. And £12k each to actually test them with a mobile rig, to see how much heat you can pull out of them.
I'd be getting busy with the digger!
