SO the house is on a hill and the garden is raised after you walk out of the back door so I don't think soil heave will be an issue?? We have extremely sandy soil.

Please excuse the state of the garden, I haven;t got round to doing any work on it since I destroyed it building the fence and as its just need a total overhaul I've left it frown

Thoughts (on the trees)??

I would say that from the pic that's about 60 to 70 foot, I had a quote of £700 to remove a 60ft Pine from our garden. However the more trees you do the cheaper it gets, in the end I had 6 x 60ft Silver birches all removed for £1k, they dropped the price by around £500 as I wanted the wood for my wood burner. Took them 2 days to remove the 6 Silver Birches, the Pine tree is still standing. This was in Wokingham so probably similar prices. I had 3 quotes (always get 3) and the highest was £3.5k for all of the above!!! These tree guys always haggle as well.

Almost impossible to tell from a picture but from what I can see it looks like a days work too get them down, the brush out and chipped but the wood left in whatever sizes it comes down in and left where it lays.
Again this is from what I can see from the pic which is not a lot really. Prices vary around the country but in my area (Herts) anywhere between 600-900 for a 3 man crew is the going rate.

Very disappointing. I expected something more like a giant redwood, as tall as the Eiffel tower !

First quote is approx £700 per tree and a couple hundred to do both stumps. That includes taking the wood.

If they are bigger than they look in the pics then that's about right for a reputable, properly insured professional company.
One thing I find strange is why is it an approximate cost rather than a fixed price?

Trees are about 75ft each the slightly thicker one with worse access is 750 and the thinner one is 650 stump grinding is 120 and 90 I think and the 3 medium sized oaks round the corner are 180.

I just approxed it for forum ease.

I think it seems fair for the time etc.

He said the difference in price to leave the wood is nominal and he'll sell me a van load of pine for 50£ when ever I want it so for the sake of not having to deal with it it seems easier to have them remove it all

Before you do anything, have you checked that they're not covered by preservation orders?
Or in a conservation area (check both with your local council before starting work).
