Hello all,

I planted a beech hedge back in February using bare rooted plants.....a few haven't grown but these are being replaced however what concerns me more is that some are starting to turn brown as in pictures below.

I'm sure that they are getting enough water as I have got a soaker hose running between them and the ground is damp when scraping off the first inch of soil, any ideas?

You never heard the expression, life's a beech, and then you die?

It's difficult to say, worse case bacterial leaf scorch in which case you are doomed.

Otherwise bad wind burn, too hot, too dry, or too wet........

Beech certainly doesn't like water-logging or heavy soils, it grows best in shallow soil on chalk - it's a fine balance between getting water to the roots whilst establishing without drowning it.

But is the water actually getting down to root level or is it just the surface that is a pond?

Too wet maybe...I don't think Beech likes wet ground.
