My mum has an old stone patio which is nice but jet washing never gets it properly clean. I saw on QVC or something a fluid you can spray on to kill it all off. It took about 6 months in total but looked good.

This isn't cheap but it's bloody good. Only thing I could find that actually managed to do the job. I left it on overnight, jetwashed the following morning. A marked difference.

^ My brother's just bought a similar product to treat his patio, that surrounds the house (!) he's just bought. I can't remember the actual name of the chemicals within this stuff, but it may be available cheaper if you know WHAT is in this. (I say that as I can't imagine my brother's just spent £150odd on 2 large containers of this one!) wink

Bleach. A few bottles will do it.

Last time I used 4 bottles. Squirted it on, used a stiff brush to work it in, left for 10 minutes and then jet washed off. Worked at least as good as the black spot remover stuff linked to above and for a fraction of the price.

Think of the poor puddy cats! - and plants!
Don't forget the plants.

(I would have thought bleach isn't exactly friendly to them?)

Works wonderfully. when I tip the liquid chlorine in the pool, I occasionally get a drip on to the patio. Cleans it up a treat.

Bleach was the very first thing I tried, as naturally, I had it to hand. It certainly helped to brighten the patio. Didn't shift the black spots whatsoever though.

I then tried Wet & Forget, which again did nothing (although it appears to have helped a bit with the moss on the roof tiles - but that was very much over the course of several weeks/a few months).

I then tried HG Patio Cleaner - similar outcome to bleach.

Finally, I tried the one I linked to. However, rather than leaving it on for 30mins, I left it overnight. The next day it removed 99% of the blackspots.

I've no idea how many varieties of lichen exist. All I know is that whatever the blackspot was on my Patio, it was the only thing that was able to remove it.

Ferrous sulphate is what kills moss, lichen algae etc. dirt cheap to buy in garden supplies shops. Mix with water pour on and it's all dead the next day.

Great, thanks all! However I guess the challenge with bleach is where it washes off, for example if i goes towards the lawn

Ferrous sulphate will not harm your lawn in fact it will green it up and kill any moss in it.

Won't it stain your patio though? I thought it left rust coloured stains on stone.

Ferrous sulphate will turn your patio orange if it's porous.

Sticks.

I used Patio Magic. The earlier in the year you get to it, the better. I did mine for the first time last summer and again in March when we had some dry weather and it's been fine since. Dilute it and use a sprayer, keep pets off it until it dries (which isn't long in the sun).
