As a result of this fine work....

.....I have started to rip out the ceiling for re-plumbing / wiring, when (on seeing a piece of black wire sticking out) I removed a sheet of unskimmed plasterboard to find this socket 'built' inside the stud partition..

Any ideas wtf the black thing with all the plug in connectore are?? House alarm sensor connectors?

I have something similar hiding under a kitchen worktop for a bunch of small "spot" LEDs built into the skirting board

(I didn't do it!)

Guessing here but anything to do with CCTV, lights or speakers? Is there a name on the black junction box?

Not a lot of pride gone into it is there - out of sight out of mind I suppose.

C'mon.

We've all done things that those in the future will most certainly think, WTF!?

Aah - there are LED lisghts running up the stairs - could be for them.

The leccy and plumbing truly is a mess. It was all hidden with a false ceiling so next weekends job is to start running the pipes on the joists ready for the plumber and running conduit / chasing wall for the sparky to drop in new wiring.

Forget the future, people are thinking it now.

A bit of a mix and match going on there. But I'd like to mention the mid run flexy pipes. A true genius installed that lot.

Unplug them and see what stops working.

That will be the next step.

To keep cost down, I intend doing the majority of work myself (obviously not the ‘technical’ things-that-can-go-bang aspects!) such as chasing in the cables, fitting the boxes etc. Ideally, I would like a spark to do a first fix of just laying the cables loosely thereby allowing me time to run neatly around the ceiling / chase into the walls down to sockets etc and then coming back to check and connect it all up

Would an electrician mind doing the above or would they not be too happy about it? Secondly, when would you use conduit in a ceiling? If there is no danger of damaging the cables, is it sufficient to run and clip them neatly to the floor joists and then run them through channelling down to the sockets?

Hahahaha!

I feel your pain OP - I've just had a similar experience - replacing a bathroom, pulled up the floor and the plumbing was such a mess that I was compelled to re-do the lot. It was just plain offensive. At least in my case there was no disgusting plastic stuff involved. God that's bad.

And the connectors - LED spots, teeny ones. I've got one like that under my kitchen units.

I'm actually loving that first photo - he clearly has no ability whatsoever to use copper pipe - but he's used bits of offcuts and so forth to make up sections, then just hung them from the rafters. I love the tentative little bend that's been made in one of them.

Personal opinion but you would be paying the sparks to do the job he is qualified for - the electrics. Paying him to do the labouring part is expensive and he (more likely his assistant) probably isn't as bothered as you are are about what is out of sight or neatly routed.
