Put an advert in local shop window someone with a wood burner will chop it for free if they can keep the wood. That's how I get my firewood never any shortage from one year to the next.

Chainsaws are the one "man must have diy tool" that will most likely take you to A+E if you get there that is. Nasty nasty wounds. My wifes friend is testament to their danger, massive wound across her abdomen, very lucky to still be here.

I used to use them professionally, would never suggest anyone does DIY with one, seen many an accident in my time, often involving ladders. Great way to remove .314keys from the gene pool though.

Up the ladder with a bowsaw. Take it down from the top, bit by bit.

If you need to be airborne with a power saw, get a B&D Alligator.
It can even be used safely one handed.

So... chainsaw? smile
Do it. I ended up with a Stihl for no other reason than they wanted to see some (irrelevant!) business insurance before they would sell it to me. They are great fun just dont get too carried away or you'll chop bits off yourself.
Wayne Bobbitt....hehe

You can use a ladder to get you started in climbing the tree. But once up there I'd have a Silky pruning saw on my belt, (-they're ludicrously sharp and straightforward to use) and take off limbs from there.

You need to undercut a bit before coming in from the top but and it'll feel like hard work but learning how to use a chainsaw up a tree is loonymental.

When comes to the trunk you can get ropes on it to help it over in the direction you want (even someone pulling should be enough). A cheap felling wedge knocked into the back-cut will stop the tree sitting back on the saw.

The safety gear is worth getting. If you do screw it up, 80 quid for a pair of trousers really isn't much.

Thanks captainzep, good advice. I'm still waiting for the ladder to be delivered, but I've started the undercut today with a hand axe which seems to be doing a job, so I'll probably just continue with that once the ladder comes.

I've a massive axe for the base. As much as I want to own a chainsaw, I couldn't take having to admit in this thread I'd chopped my leg off.

Ended up axing it down in two pieces. Was a lot of work, but I've got all my limbs and have earnt some serious man points.

Thanks for all the advice, and for the record, those ladders in the eBay link are excellent.

I've got a chainsaw and have take a few trees down with it, but tbh it's a bit too easy so I'm going to use an axe for the next one. Just because...

My top tip would be to make sure the area behind you is free from any potential snagging hazards when using an axe.

And make sure your legs are out of the way of any "glance" zone
