Hi all, had a quote for a patio last week am waiting for another company to arrange a quote but the guy from last week has just come round and said he has had a cancellation and could do the works on Weds Thur and Friday this week, I am working from home this week. He has reduced the price of his quote some.

Having never had this type of work done before I have no idea on prices. The guy came round measured up and drew up a basic sketch of what we wanted, his idea was to go block paving instead of flags as its not a very large area. The quote involves a manhole cover that would be replaced with a square one covered in the same block paving.

3 Days work with slightly limited access through a single door so no mini digger, they take away all waste.

Quote is £3600 for 34m2 in the block paving shown below, It is convenient for me as I am working from home this week.

I this a decent price or should I get a couple of other quotes.

Has he given you a spec ? Depth of dig out, what sub bsae material, drainage etc?
3 days,limited access,by hand ? seems optimistic to me...

3 days may be optimistic....but the cost is over £100 per square metre, I guess he is grabbing a few mates from the pub to come and dig like the clappers on Day 1 for beer money ;-)

Price-wise, http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=546... suggests £80-100 should be the right ball-park, so not necessarily a top bargain.....but if you have seen any previous work he has done and been impressed...
As the prev poster says, make sure you are getting a decent quality below the blocks!

thanks for the replies,

He said they dig down to 8" wack it then sub base and wack it then sand and blocks.

They are listed on Trustedtraders.com get a 4.7 over 45 reviews, seen pictures and also pointed out a local house they just finished a big job on in the same town. Looks very nice but that's just the surface

Not sure I can bring myself to go for it, without any more quotes to give me an idea of the cost.
The bloke said to use decent flags would be more expensive.
Would be very nice to get it done before we go away but having not had any other quotes this may be very pricey at £109/m2.

The Brett Beta blocks look like they will cost about £1200 Inc Vat.

When I look on Google you get prices of about 80/m2 but this is from 2008/11 have prices gone up for ground works. This could be just plain block pavers.

I would ask to see examples he did 1-3 years ago to see how it fares over time.

Seen a job he has just finished and it looks very tidy.
But I think I will have to tell him I need a couple more quotes to get a better idea of price.

I would expect the price to be closer to 3k tbh would have thought for nearly 4k you would get some nice quarried stone flags. Or am I way of the mark with that.

You wont get reclaimed flags for that price but Indian Sandstone should be in the ballpark. My main thought is the timescale hes given you,3 days for a complete job, through a garage/doorway,by hand ? Either i was very slow ( !! ) or he is a speedscaper.....mind you i suppose he might have a few workers on it and not just a 2 man team?
As you yourself said, you should always get 2 or 3 quotes to compare not just price and spec but also to get a 'feel' for the firm/bloke doing it. (innuendo not intended )

I will be calling him this morning to say its just too short notice to go ahead with at this time, as far as I can tell they are a reputable company, but I need some more quotes before I can drop 3 to 4k.

I will kick myself when I get a couple more quotes and they turn out the same price or more but it has to be done.

You never know, he might have another surprise 'cancellation' in the near future.
