Im spraying a guitar body but it looks like one of the colour coats was not set properly because even though it felt dry, when I later pushed my thumb across it it was clearly still soft under the 'skin' of the top layer.

The wood body had two coats of primer, three of colour (pale blue) and then a couple of clear lacquer.

This is the colour paint. I left double the recommended time between coats.

Is there any way it can be rescued? If I leave it long enough, will it eventually harden enough to sand?

1. Get a permanent marker
2. Re-apply your magic thumb liberally.
3. Write the name of any of these people underneath it

4. Straight to fleabay!
5. Cut me in for 10%

but seriously - I can see sandpaper in your future

biggrin

Lots of sandpaper. Needs taking all the way back I'd say (or sending off to a paint shop!).

Your best bet is to go on reranch and look at the forum there. Really friendly bunch and very knowledgeable.

I think the best bodge job would t to let it sit to get solid, try and remove the skin than has gathered with a scalpel or something and then rebuild that area up with a few coats. Then start the sanding process (working your way down to 800-2000 grit)

I think they say 30 days to fully harden with the nitro paint?

The real option is to start again but not really what you want to hear - I'd also try and make a little tent to spray in to avoid unwanted dust and make sure you're wearing a respirator.

The other option is to turn it in to a relic and put a big juicy dink in that area - prob what I'd do wink

Good luck.

Plastikote takes a while to really flash off. In the summer a week or so. I've stopped using it & started using Rustoleum Combi colour. Still takes a while to go off but once hard is very hard indeed. It can be machine polished & worked to a very good gloss.
