In the process of buying a house and there is a hot tub in the garden.
Vendor has asked if we want it. Its an estate sale so not really got any info.

Its at least 6 years old as it was on google earth in 2009.
I guess its going to need a pro to come and get it back into working order, replace filters and deep clean etc. Don't think its been used in 12 months+ maybe longer.

Done a bit of research and it sounds like they need to be left running 24/7 really so I guess with 1-2 years sitting there empty seals etc may be a problem. How are they protected from frost?

Any experts care to advise?
If it's not been working for 12 months and has no water in it now, there is a fair chance that when you fill it you will find leaks from the internal pipework. A hottub needs to be kept running otherwise even the smallest water in the pipes can freeze in winter and split the pipes. If it's full and runs now then it's probably ok, if it's been turned off/empty it's probably going to leak. The pipes in the case should be embedded in foam so leaks are hard to find, definately a case of keep using it rather than mothball it.

editted to add, assuming it works and has been working recently, a deep clean is simple, it takes me about 2-3 hours to do a clean/drain/clean, refill, about 60 mins of that time is the refill. they are really quite simple things to manage.

It will cost them more to remove than its worth so say you don't want it but they are welcome to leave it there. Then if you don't want it, take it out
Very much this. We were aware of a hot-tub at a property we eventually purchased last year. We didn't even bother to discuss a offer for it, despite the seller being keen, as I would not ever consider one (... horrid, unhygienic money pits grumpy ). The Seller was very irked though, exclaiming "why would you not want it?" like it was the ultimate attraction of the property. All became clear a couple of weeks later when we went back to check some dimensions for curtains etc., the 'marvellous' hot tub was in a skip in the front garden laugh The cheeky gits wanted us to have the expense of disposing of it. They had the last laugh though as they also took away the summer house it was positioned in (which I had earmarked to convert to a home office mad).

Top Tip- Always get the 'Fixtures and Fittings' List in good time and review it with fine-tooth comb. After pressing for this for weeks via our Solicitor, we eventually got it a couple of days before exchange. Several issues cropped up due to the seller's use of 'vague' wording in this document, ie. 'hot tub' meaning the tub and the building around it.

^ That's a st load of pampas grass. No wonder it gets used every night - in a couple of years you'll even be competing with Jordan's "number"!

Just gone through the same thing, The vendors I was buying off wanted £3000 for it though as it was 12 months old.

Told them to take it out, as im not a swinger and im pretty sure they were going off the full height mirrors in the bedrooms.

Mrs Dan recently hired one (abit a portable one) for her Hen Do, I used it for 10 minutes and got bored.

Definitely dodged a bullet there

Thanks chaps.

Been to see it tonight.

Its old - you can see from the outside its prob 8-10 years old. Its empty. Might be alright, but who knows. Unused since this time last year and inside there is a bit of mould (expected I guess) and leaves etc. Defo will require a pro to visit and re commission IMHO. Needs a new cover I would say.

Its also unbranded as far as I can tell. Good size though 5-6 seater. Lastly, I can see no way of actually getting it out of the garden unless they ether hire a crane or get it lifted over into a neighbours garden. The conservatory has been built after the hot tub went in so literally its stuck in there.

My only issue now is if they do leave it in the garden and its FUBARd how the hell do I get it out!

Mine costs about £30-40 a month in electric. Had it years and use it regularly.
I wouldnt pay a specialist, fill the thing up and see if it runs and check for leaks.

if it works, then you can think about putting chemicals it it. If its really manky then you may need to change the water within a few days.

Water would cost about £4.50 to fill a typical 6ft tub

A saw.

Did you get a photo? Someone might recognise it and ID a brand, tell you what it's worth.

No photo but this is the same I am pretty sure.
The cover is the same, steps same, woodwork is also the same.
The cover is "Rising Dragon".

Having looked at capacity / sizes on various sites I think it must be at least 1500L.

If it is trash, the easiest way is the old fashioned 'saw and hammer' technique.

You'd probably do something manly like hire a cutter and go nuts on it.

They will be keen for you to keep it as a regular hot tub removal is north of £250, add in a crane etc and its going to be near £1k. As has been said, they are wood, fibreglass and expanding foam in construction. Personally if it were a simple removal if fubar'd then its a possible punt. Otherwise, as I would suspect, the tub was emptied because a motor packed in and they couldnt be bothered to fix it, Without emptying it would turn into a green cesspit very quickly.

£30 a month in electricity to use it a few times s month, plus the faff of maintaining and changing the water every few months... do you really want one that much ?
Removal is difficult, I helped a mate get rid of one, chopped it up with a power saw and took to the dump over a few trips...

I got mine on interest free credit. It costs about £100/month for 3 years, and included delivery, setup and a starter kit of chemicals. I really couldn't fault the company, and it gets used most days, sometimes more than once. Do it, they're fantastic.
Where from?

As for OP removing it. I would Go at it with a few mates, an angle grinder and hammer smile

Thanks for all the input. Plan is - leave it or take it.
If they leave it I will attempt to put it back into service.
If not we could use the space for something else.

If they do leave it I will get some pics up on here once we are in!

Can you offer it for free if they collect?

I assume most people who would want one own a Misubishi Warrior or similar.
