I've gone into battle with the door company. They are happy to put the brackets right, fit the internal switch and give me a manual/ guarantee but they are twitching about the fact that it is too short. They said they would look at the dimensions on Monday. I would be reasonably happy if it opened fully which is what I thought at first. The track is long enough but when I looked at it the front of the door is right up to the pulleys so could go no further. They originally wanted to fit the door behind but the build is designed to take the door frame against a nib in the outer leaf. If anyone could post a picture of theirs fully open it may help my plight. The door as correctly said is an Alutec.

As for the build cost. I was quoted £20K to get it to this stage minus the doors. The plan is I do the rest. I know I have specified a few extras such as insulated floor. I am meeting the builder tomorrow to worm out of him the extra costs. I am expecting another £2-3K. This is the 3rd build he has done for me and he is notorious for extras and under quoting so I factored a bit of this in. Brilliant builder and project manager though even at 70 odd.

The personal door and windows are goin in tomorrow. I have a day off so will get some more of the wiring in. The trench for the services is the next big one.

aQuick update.

Not a lot happening due to my time and the whether. The rendering is done and the scaffolding has gone. Not seen it in daylight yet. Slowly plodding on with the wiring when I get chance should have the downstairs ring in before Christmas.

On another subject what can you cover stairs with if you don't want carpet? This has been puzzling me for some time.

I had the same issue in the end I painted my garage stairs in good quality external white paint then covered the steps in skateboard deck tape, bought a big roll on ebay, looks good and works well

Time for an update as one or two things have been happening.

After Christmas my builder arranged a joiner to call in and quote me for a staircase on a Friday afternoon as I finish work early. Just as we had done the deal the ground-worker turned up (builders project management get him while he is around) and told me he was digging the service trench and drains on Monday this was Friday!

So I take the chains off the front of the house and move the 4 tons of gravel

This is what the drive looked like

Cables and pipes ready to go in

In the meantime one of my temporary ring main and the addition of a Christmas pool table that I now have to work around or use as a table. Note the junk building up as the shed is leaking badly.

Now for a few of the trench

In the meantime the staircase is in

Pictures to follow

In the background I have been putting the wiring in.

Short update as I am pushed for time but the gas guy has now refused to connect the new pipe as the meter is too small. Funny that he surveyed the job before I spent £2K on the trench for the pipe. I am now in the process of getting a U16 meter fitted. Not much info on this available on the net but I will post my experience. If anyone has done this advice would be appreciated.

Time for a bit of an update as a lot has been going on albeit slowly as I am doing everything myself with only a few hours a week to spare plus cash is tight for materials.

A couple of the drive going back together:

The stairs going in:

Water connected:

Now this is the interesting one. The builder cast the bund too big therefore it leaves me with loads of problems boxing in and creating an under stairs cupboard. No worries I am having a slot between the stairs and the under stairs wall to store my scaffold tower:

The first proper view of upstairs:

Then the insulation. Horrible job and expensive to buy:

Me putting the upstairs ring main in:

Putting the plumbing in. Scary seeing the upstairs radiator from downstairs:

More circuits going in:

A bit more pipework going in:

Insulation between the floor and ceiling going in:

The floor going down upstairs:

The first car to go in:

I decided to put a bathroom in upstairs. It will take a small shower toilet and basin. Difficult to plan due to the sloping ceiling:

I had to take a few weeks off to get the garden sorted for our annual BBQ. I also had to make the front of the house presentable again after digging it all up:

Starting to get some paint on:

Current status all plumbing ad eclectics in starting to board out. More pictures to follow.

looking good. personally, I would have painted / rendered / plastered the internal walls prior to fitting the electrics etc. would give it such a nicer look and also reflects a lot more light that plain block work. but great build anyway.

I will be painting the interior walls (white) and floor (royal blue) once the ceiling is up and plastered. It will be more difficult than doing it before though. I might just loosen all the fittings.

I presume you're over 4m height with this? Did you need planning permission? How close to the boundary are you allowed to go?

Could you fit a downstairs washroom under the stairs?

Want it.

Yes it is 6.2M and I did have to get planning permission. It is roughly 1.5M from the two boundary walls to give a good space for maintenance gutter cleaning etc. I'm not sure you could get a toilet under the stairs I had not really thought about it. Drainage would be an issue as the septic tank is to the left hand side of the garage so I would not get the drop from under the stairs. I can make it work from the upstairs bathroom at that end though. I have bought a Belfast sink which will go in the back left corner for filling carwash buckets hand washing etc.

What will you do with the outside as the ground level is lower and not level.
Is the little ramp temporary?

Does anyone have experience of 2 pack epoxy floor paint?
I'm a bit scared of some of the workable times of 20 mins. This would mean several mixes to cut in and several to get the paint down. I would expect this to create a patchy finish.
Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Also where should I buy this type of paint I have seen lots of high prices on the net but I am sure there are cheaper suppliers?

That is coming along well!

What did you do about the garage door rails when plastering? Did you drop them, then reattach through the plasterboard?
