I know this isn't Which magazine but...

I have a trusty DC04 upright (circa 1999) that seems to work just fine. A little bruised and battered but loads of suction.

Borrowed a friend's new V6 Absolute cordless thingie and did a little test.

Hoovered a couple of square meters of carpet with the DC04.

Then went over the same area with the cordless with the power brush bar. The amount of extra dust collected was startling. Tried the same test on a couple of other types of carpet with much the same result.

What gives? The DC04's brush bar is definitely turning and there's loads of suction at the brush bar. Might the bristles be worn down to the point they no longer do anything? I notice that when I push the front of the DC04 into the pile I can't seem to hear it slow up or feel any more rolling resistance.

When did you last replace the filters?

We have a DC04, over time the performance deteriorated, with new filters there was a drastic improvement.

The filters have been in use for quite some time but they do get cleaned/washed periodically. But as I said I don't think suction is the problem. The DC04 has considerably more suction than the cordless one even when it's in Max mode.

Im fed up with replacing our Dysons, they just don't seem to last very long and aren't very effective after a while, despite cleaning filters etc. However I do like our Dyson cordless hand held.

Ive just bought a Vax Air Reach U90-MA-Re and it is absolutely amazing, Cleans up so much more than any Dyson we've had. The wife finds it a little difficult to push along as the suction is so powerful, but she absolutely loves it, it actually lifts the carpet up its so powerful. The only slight negative is it sucks up so much dirt the cartridge soon fills up and we are forever emptying it.

Got mine on amazon for £89 (now £99) whereas the usual retail price is about £200.
