Does anyone have any experience of getting their insinkerator repaired? My cousins house sat for us while we were away getting married and they said the insinkerator just stopped working. It doesn't appear to have anything jammed in it but it smokes when turned on and makes a horrible noise.

The spares don't seem to be readily available unless I am missing something? It's not even clear how the thing comes apart, I suspect it will just need the motor replacing but I fear the motor is going to be £400+

In my experience (I've been through 3 of them) they either work or they don't - i.e. not easily repaired. Does the internal disc/basket rotate? They easily jam-up with bits of bone etc. it's simple to free it by just prying the assembly against the direction of rotation with a long flat-blade screwdriver.

A 1/2 hp basic model retails here in the US for less than $80 and a range-topping 5/8hp continuous flow model is less than $300, so how a motor alone can cost 400quid is beyond me.

It rotates freely but sparks and smokes out of the bottom.

Sparks and smoke would suggest it's fked. That's the technical term.

Does it have an air switch connected to it?
How old is it?
What model is it?

Yes it does have an air switch, it's an 18 month old evolution e200.

Is the air switch tube in the side or is it in the bottom?

It does sound as though yours is FUBAR'd so I'd just replace it.

I fitted one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Insinkerator-ISE-Evoluti... when our original Franke unit stopped working. It got something jammed intermittently and I could only strip it so far and couldn't access the inner chamber.

For a couple of hundred quid and 1/2 hours easy work, just replace and be done with it.

As an aside, the Evo 100 is as quiet as a church mouse which makes a pleasant change to the old one, even when it was working properly.

It looks like it is being replaced under warranty by their local repair agent, I have given them the details and they have ordered a replacement as they say it sounds like it is dead.

Thats good, I thought it might be under warranty.
I would not surprise me if there is water in the air tube???

Just to finish this, no idea why it went wrong (I don't think it was water in the tube) but it was replaced very smoothly under the warranty.
