A friend has just bought one of the Premier Inn beds. I have to admit I find them very comfortable

Manufactured by Hypnos so not a cheap brand.

King size including mattress and divan base is £900. £525 for just the mattress.
This is why asking for advice on a bed is pretty pointless.

I find the Premier Inn beds horribly uncomfortable, a sprung mattress with a memory foam layer does absolutely nothing for me other than give me back ache within minutes.

We bought a 1200 pocket sprung mattress with no crappy foam layer and divan from Dreams (iirc) a few years ago and it's the best bed I've ever slept in, no problems with delivery or after service, they even rang us up to makesure we were happy with it under their 'comfort guarantee' or whatever it's called that lets you exchange it if you're not happy.

lol. A like for like JL mattress (same no. Of springs) and the JL salesperson confirming that Harrison are their supplier..I'm believe i'm comparing apples with apples.

He's a business so has incorporated the cost of delivering, installing and disposal (and will still make a descent profit) whereas JL charge them as extras.

Having done a lot of research on beds of late, our next bed will be from these guys. Just waiting for some house stuff getting done. Looking at Super King Zip kit. Pricey, but if my research is accurate, worth it.
Bought from these guys a month or so ago. Brilliant service and very good product. I had a bed in mind but after speaking to them they recommended the next cheapest model based on what I thought we were after. Settled into it now and love it.

Just a related question that hopefully someone can help with.

I'm quite light (12 stone ish) but find that the only mattresses I like the feel of in the shops are at the extra firm (pockets) end of the spectrum. But then many sites suggest I'm unlikely to need that sort of thing and a mattress should be softer.

All the buying guides I can find just talk about what the are made of. Memory foam, coil sprung, pockets etc. And only 1 site said "Lie on the bed and see if you can get your hand in between the small of the back" If you can it's too firm apparently.

Can anyone suggest a way of choosing firmness? (I've also discovered girls like softer, whilst there isn't 1 imminently I'd hate to have a far too stiff bed ruin chances of a rematch biggrin )

Also not loving the tufted effect (buttons?) on most. Look uncomfortable to me.

NB: Thanks to the person that pointed out beds are bespoke to certain shops. No price matching here! And also I found that Carpetright sell beds as well. Strange. But will they be any better than the others?

I imagine sleeping on a sack filled with rocks and used hypodermic needles will be comfier than anything from Carpetright.

I'll be investing in a new bed and mattress next year and having read the http://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk/ website that someone else provided it'll be from these guys. It looks a brilliant, honest setup which these days is a pleasant surprise.

I mentioned this earlier, but in case you missed it.... Our Harrison Mattress was made to order, with a firm side for me and a soft side for my wife. Cost about £600 IIRC.

Good price. And the factory bed guys offer sided mattresses as well it seems.

I was more after a way to tell if I should go for a "4 Firm" or a "5 Extra Firm" Is it purely down to what I think lying on it in the shop or is there a more scientific/quantifiable way?

After spending more and more money on 'miracle mattresses' (last one was £2k) and still waking up aching, I have come to the conclusion that a Flat Thing is not really the best design for the human body.
Same here, bought a John Lewis expensive mattress and struggled with it until I was forced to head out and buy a £175 memory foam mattress 'topper'. That has made a huge difference to me!

We've just replaced our 12yr old King size Sleepeeze mattress with a Silentnight 2600 pocket spring one from Amazon of all places! We looked around locally but most indies stock cheaper stuff & we didn't want to use the sheds.

Ended up seeing this one on an Amazon lightning deal & paid £379.00 for it, had some great reviews & they normally have them up for £500+

It's bloody heavy (54kg according to booklet!) & deeper than the old one which took some getting used to, after a few weeks it is very nice indeed cloud9

I bought a Tempur memory foam pillow about 18mths ago, still not convinced but after spending that much I'm goona get my moneys worth out of it! Wouldn't want to risk a memory foam mattress personally.

We got our bed from the local co-op departments store, they had most of the Hypnos range to try as well as various other brands.

We tried loads of beds, but ended up with a Hypnos - maybe worth checking out one of their stockists?

Do NOT go to Dreams! The worst fking service I've ever experienced, didn't deliver, didn't give a st!
I will second that DO NOT GO THERE...... To cut a long story, ordered a + £1,000 matress which did not arrive when they said it would despite me specifically asking about delivery time. They never bothered calling, said it arrived dirty so sent it back (bullsh#t) to the manufacturer and again never bothered telling us. In the end I told them I was going to cancel (credit card purchase) unless it arrived and we had £200 off. Then more sh#t about us having to speak to head office for discount. Usu poor phone service from HO, sent vouchers !!!! Who the f#ck is going to waste more money there. Wife told if you want good customer service to go to Harrods et al. Gave them until Saturday (two weeks plus after promised delivery) and finally got £200 cheque and the mattress.

GO ELSEWHERE.

For clarity

To consider
Harrisons
John Lewis Natural - Supplied by Harrisons??
Somnus - This looks to be Harrisons.
Feather & Black
Hypnos
Tempur
Costco Geltex
Latex Sense

To Avoid
Dreams
Bensons/Sleepmaster
Carpetste

What is the consensus on 'better'. Is it spring count? Filler material? Weight?
What are the absolute must have criteria I should be looking for?

Plenty to go on there. Prob look at Harrisons first as they are local. Just seen their Edgar & Spinks brand RRP's online. Wow.

Thank you.

Agreed. Highly trained salesmen, cheaply made products and god help you if you have any problems afterwards.

I've just bitten the bullet and ordered one of these in medium;

http://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk/product/artis...

If it lives up to the claims I doubt I'll ever want to get out of bed. I'll let people know how I get on when it arrives.

We went to Bensons for our new mattress. Stumbled on one of their clearance outlets by mistake and got a £1500 Sealy Adelaide mattress for just £800. Nothing wrong with it, just used in the store as a demonstrator for a couple of weeks in a branch.
