Other than buying a big selection box of metric bolts I'll never need, is there a way to find what thread a bolt hole is?!

You can get external ones for identifying bolt threads as well.

Take it to an engineering supplies place, they'll help you out.

Measure the distance between two of the threads, this will give you the pitch.

This site has a reference, which relates the pitch in mm to the standard description (fine, super fine,) etc. given the diameter of the bolt.

https://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/mea...

If for some reason you don't have access to a tape measure, but you have a tap and die set, you can just find whichever die fits...

--Edit--

Noticed you said bolt hole, the above is still relevant, if you can't fit a tape measure in to measure, put some paper around your finger and jam it in wink, it'll leave the impression of the thread on the paper, which you can then measure.

Ah, I see! Still, you should be able to buy some bolts individually, just grab a few that look like the right size.

Which telly and is guessing that it's the VESA mount / wall bracket mount correct?

If so, they're pretty much all metric - M4 / M5 / M6 / M8 depending on the age of the telly. Last M8 i saw was on a gen 1 Panasonic 42" though (and if you have one of those, it'd be cheaper to buy a new one if you pay the leccy bill!)

The other easy route is to contact the manufacturer. The repair manual / parts diag should identify the bolt.

Samsung are being a bit rubbish getting me the info (2 weeks now). The official way is to use a pair of wall mount adapters that leave M8 holes, but these adapters are unavailable. So I'm seeing if it'll work going without & just using long ish M somethings...

If its a telly its going to be metric.
It will probably be a fine thread, look at the table below and measure to the closest.

Which Samsung is it? I wall mounted one yesterday, can check bolt size if you wish, fairly sure it was m8.

..if it does that's one of the 2 bolt holes in question.

What wall bracket do you have? Did it not come with a selection of bolts? I reckon those adaptors/spacers should go at the top of the TV, to make the top holes 'flush' with the bottom holes. Holes look like M6 to me, but just a guess from the pic.

That pic with a ruler across the hole would have been more useful, but that would have also given you your answer! biggrin
Just measure across it to the outer most edges of the thread. smile

Assuming you are a man, this does not make any sense. You should have a man drawer/toolbox/shed/garage filled with this sort of stuff on the off chance you need it in 15 years time. Go and buy a selection box of bolts so that next time you are better prepared smile

You are, of course, quite right. Having had a number of TVRs in the past I'm pretty well stocked - however this time my pot-o-random-bolts has drawn a blank.

Jut been to a TOP hardware store near Bracknell (Great Hollands).
Had a great selection of bolts in tiny bags, all with hand written prices smile
