Looking for some advice. My parents have just bought/moved into a retirement flat with an electric oven/grill which, when you turn the temperature dial, trips the main circuit breaker/RCD and not the cooker circuit breaker/rcd.

The flat is about 10 years old and we assume the oven/grill, AEG/Electrolux, was new when the flat was built but does not appear to have ever been used as it is spotless. The previous owner died so we cannot confirm this.

There is power to the oven/grill as you can set the digital clock and can select either the grill or oven function and the internal light and fan come on. Touch the temperature control and the main rcd trips.

My parents had a domestic appliance engineer out today and he claims that, as the oven/grill does not appear to have been used, then moisture has got into the elements and this is causing the trip.

Any thought or advice appreciated.

Guessing touching the temperature dial is what's actually making the heating elements kick in.

I had a similar issue a few months ago on my smeg oven, turned out the element was damaged, leading to a short circuit hence the rcd being tripped.

Quick Google found the right element for £25, literally 5 minutes to change and job done. That said my oven is three years old and in regular use so can't comment on either the root cause or whether there may be another issue lurking due to age and lack of use....

Good luck with it!

Something is touching the earthed parts of the oven, hence the rcd tripping. Id say its your element too, ddepending on how competent you feel, remove the back and pull the wires of the pins to the element and then try that temprature knob, if it trips its elsewhere.

REMEMBER TO ISOLATE SUPPLY FIRST

That sounds odd. Normally theres at least two elements only one of which is likely to be at fault (if not something else). Did he insulation test the oven/components?

hairyben,

it does sound a bit odd as there are two separate elements. The "electrician" did nothing other than turn the temp dial and it tripped.

Royce44,

my father and I managed to replace the oven element at their old house so we will have a go at disconnecting the elements in this one and see if it still trips.

Did an internet search and, as my father has a multi meter, will try a continuity test on the elements.

Thanks for the advice.

I hoping the OP gets this and can help. We have got exactly the same problem. Moved into a new house and the AEG Competence oven looks absolutely like it's never been used. It really is new. All lights up and as soon as you turn up either the oven or grill the RCD trips. Did you ever resolved the matter, and how? Your help and time write is appreciated.

I bought a graded oven but it was several months before I was i a position to install it. When I did, I found it was cutting out as soon as the temperature was selected. I was pretty annoyed as I'd mislaid all the paperwork. I assumed it was some sort of mechanical issue with the oven but after repeatedly trying to get it to warm up I discovered it was staying on marginally longer each time before cutting out. Eventually it started to get some proper heat into it and it was fine thereafter.

I recall googling it at the time and discovered damp elements are indeed 'a thing'.

Thanks Risotto, I'm off tomorrow and will give this a try. We don't get a second before the RCD trips and all lights go off downstairs....its a job for the daytime.

Make sure you tape one of the spade connectors when removed from the element in case they touch each other or even touch the oven casing, it'll continue to short and trip your RCD wink

Just saying.... (from previous experience)!!

If it is a moisture issue, then blow a hairdrier on them for a a few minutes
