I have a decent sized double garage: one half is normal length, the other half again. Currently has 5 sets of flourescent tubes (mixture of double and single units). Light is ok but following a plumbing incident upstairs which filled one fitting with water, I'm considering replacing the lot with surface mount LED panels.

Any recommendations and will 5 be enough to light the space without creating shadows?

I am not sure this will really be much help.. My garage is 30ft x 20ft and I fitted 6 18w LED panels. It could have done with a couple more to be honest, although they are the dirt cheap eBay Chinese knock offs!

I wouldn't use panels with a garage, I supplied 2 x 4ft vapourproof fittings to a mate recently for his single garage, cheaper than panels (by the time you've added on the cost of surface mount frame), about 20% brighter, IP65 rated - so no issues if you have a repeat flood, can be washed if it gets dirty in there & are also IK08 rated (means they will take a reasonable knock & still work). Based on 2 doing the job for a single garage (plenty bright enough for him to rebuild bike engines in there) then 5 ought to do the job in your garage.
