Just putting the planning application in for a contemporary build on the coast, one side of the house will be pitched and we think we will clad in zinc (roof and walls), the other side will be flat roof and render/stone. Mrs Blue worried that the zinc side will look like a Premier Inn, would others concur? The other option is to go zinc roof and mix of timber and stone.

I don't think it will look like a PI - as long as it is done with some imagination and with a good coherent design.

Whats the house going to be made of and will that have a bearing on how it is installed etc?

Timber frame and steel. She just can't get with the whole metal cladding but accepts that tile on a contemporary build will look naff, I think I need to find and take her to some example buildings.

How well will it stand salt air ?

I know it's zinc but I've seen galv change colour and go crusty / pitted.

Zinc will erode quite quickly dependent on gauge . It will also chalk over. Look at rain screen cladding.

Please watch out for the installation detailing! If you want I can message you with some specific info on how it should be done. In short, it must not be just put directly onto the timber structure, there needs to be a drained and vented gap between the zinc and the timber frame behind. I have seen a few jobs where the zinc is placed directly on the roof and walls and it has failed horribly due to condensation.

As for the looks, what had you got planned, vertical standing seam from roof to walls? I really liked the look of the zinc scales used on this grand designs project.

Hi, Just spotted the query on standing seam Zinc roofs.. bit late.. but have a look at a product called PLX supplied by The Metal Roof Company based in Ealing. We were in the same position with the Zinc cost and went with this Swedish product. Looked even better than the Zinc and cost half the price ... :-)

Tata Steel Colour coat urban roof just fitted to main house - garage next (seen on the left in the pics) once house is completed inside/out. Pic of rear of house before and after. Note that no gutters or down pipes have been fitted yet. Sun reflection on large dormer in last pic distorting true colour - all the same RAL.
Very pleased with the result - identical RAL colour Danish high performance thin frame aluminium windows and composite doors to match (ignore the rest of the house and the building mess)
Obviously the hopelessly dreary 1980s brick & extension block walls will be dealt with as well.

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd add to this one.

Having had a house extension project priced up by a couple of builders we need to save a few pounds to make it affordable.

The plans have in place a zinc roof for one section, it's virtually flat (5% incline to centre).

Looking to see what we can substitute to and considering

1) Colorcoat Urban
https://www.tatasteelconstruction.com/en_GB/Produc...

2) Euroclad Vieo
http://www.euroclad.com/roofs/vieo-roof-profile/

3) Lindab standing seam PLX

I'd be grateful to hear experienced of any of these. Most importantly as to whether these have been cheaper than zinc if you considered zinc also? In short we want as near to a zinc look but at much less cost.

I considered at least two of those for my 10 degree pitch roof.

I also considered Kingzip

I went with Lopitch in the end as I wanted to do it myself.

Check the specs as I thought 10 degrees was the minimum for some of them.

Thanks. Actually it might be 10 degrees (I just plucked 5 out of my head as couldn't be bothered to dig the plans out). I'll have a look at those, the m2 price will be key.
